Seit rund 25 Jahren spielt die Künstlerin ironisch mit Geschlechterklischees und Stereotypen der Konsumgesellschaft. Mit »Shoplifters from Venus« präsentiert das Kunst Museum Winterthur nach 15 Jahren erstmals in der Schweiz wieder eine umfassende Einzelausstellung der Genfer Künstlerin, in der sie den Dialog mit der Moderne sucht und deren männliche Prägung lustvoll offenlegt. Das kommende Begleitbuch ist dabei mehr als nur ein Ausstellungskatalog: Es folgt der Entwicklung des künstlerischen Werks anhand aller Einzelausstellungen der Künstlerin seit den 1990er Jahren. Essays von Simon Baier, Konrad Bitterli und Elisabeth Bronfen beleuchten ausgewählte Aspekte ihres Schaffens, das über die Jahre nichts an inhaltlicher Brisanz und emanzipatorischer Kraft verloren hat. Although the three prominent modernist artists Piet Mondrian (1872-1944), Barnett Newman (1905-1970), and Dan Flavin (1933-1996) each belong to a different generation, all of them have devoted their creativity to abstract art in groundbreaking ways. Under various intellectual and social auspices they relied upon ascetics in their unheard-of radical dealings with art. Using pure color, concrete form, and new materials, they expanded the dimensions of art into the universal. This volume appears in conjunction with a large, special exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Basel, and features each of the three artists in chronological order, so that the sequencing gives rise to enlightening nexuses. Reena Spaulings
Who - or what - is Reena Spaulings? Since 2004 the name has stood for various collective artistic activities. 0Initially Reena Spaulings was the title of a novel. Around the same time, a gallery space in New York was founded, which since then has represented artists such as Merlin Carpenter, Jutta Koether, Claire Fontaine, and Klara Lidén. Also in 2004, an artist collective was formed that operates under the name of the fictional artist Reena Spaulings, creating collective paintings that are both reflective of the system and self-deprecating. The comprehensive catalogue is the very first Reena Spaulings publication, including a richly illustrated chronology of the collective's former work.
