Shelf Life is the first book dedicated to the work of renowned contemporary artist Neil Gall. Bold and experimental, Gall is enjoying a burgeoning international reputation. Gall employs a variety of techniques, including modeling, assemblage and photography, layering unconventional materials such as duct tape, plasticine and wire to create his haunting, complex sculptures and paintings. Working outside the usual traditions and subject matter of the genre, Gall is best known for his "S & M sculpture paintings", which echo the disquiet of Hans Bellmer's dolls, and conjure the flotsam and jetsam of everyday life into stunted, contorted, and amputated characters. This technique of "layering" in his working process reflects his diverse referencing of art history and movements from Dutch still life to Surrealism. This book orients Gall within both the Surrealist and Photorealist traditions, with insightful written contributions by Simon Groom, Johanna Malt and Charles Darwent alongside stunning reproductions of his work, which bring his way of working and his final oil on canvas creations to life. Shelf Life is a thought-provoking, lavish exploration of this exciting artist.

The qualities that have caused clay to be overlooked as a medium by those writing the history of modern art are precisely those that make it attractive to artists. It is easy to work, fragile, inexpensive, unpredictable and physical, and therefore inherently subversive. A Secret History of Clay reveals the previously undisclosed love affair between artists and this most humble of materials and in doing so re-writes modern art history. Works by some of the greatest artists of the twentieth century, many never reproduced before, will be fully illustrated in colour, tracing the transition of ceramics from a craft pursuit to something altogether more radical. Simon Groom, curator of the exhibition, argues the case for a re-examination of the use of clay in modern art. The distinguished ceramicist and writer Edmund de Waal explores its history, examining little-known works works by groups such as the Fauves, Russian Suprematists, German Expressionists, Italian Futurists, and CoBrA, as well as by artists including Duchamp, Miro, Picasso and Noguchi. The book will also feature extracts from the manifestos and writings of both artists and critics on the use of clay. Starting with Gauguin,

Public Investment Management Reference Guide

The Public Investment Management (PIM) Reference Guide aims to convey country experiences and good international practices as a basis for decisions on how to address a country-specific PIM reform agenda. The country references are drawn largely from previous diagnostics and technical assistance reports of the World Bank. The application of country diagnostics and assessments has revealed a need to address the following issues when undertaking a country reform in PIM: • Clarification of the definition and scope of public investment and public investment management • Establishment of a sound legal, regulatory, and institutional setting for PIM, making sure it is linked to the budget proces...

Making Do and Getting By investigates the process of perception and communication - how we see what we see, what we do with what we see, how we name what we think we have seen, who we share it with and who is speaking to whom.Beyond this, it documents an excess - a creativity beyond necessary functionality, something transformative that lurks below the surface intention in acts of ordering and repair. In this ongoing series of photographs taken on his daily trajectories, celebrated British artist, Richard Wentworth frames with a light and witty touch the art of the human hand. This unique artist's book features an interview with Richard Wentworth by curator, Hans Ulrich Obrist.
