The First World War and subsequent peace settlement shaped the course of the twentieth century, and the profound significance of these events were not lost on Harold Temperley, whose diaries are presented here. An established scholar, and later one of Britain’s foremost modern and diplomatic historians, Temperley enlisted in the army at the outbreak of the war in August 1914. Invalided home from the Dardanelles campaign in 1915, he spent the remainder of the war and its aftermath as a general staff officer in military intelligence. Here he played a significant role in preparing British strategy for the eventual peace conference and in finalising several post-war boundaries in Eastern Europ...
The Development of International Law
"Believing that changes in International Law have been ultimately an expression of changes in the state system of the world and in the practice of the nations, we have tried, as it were, to cut into the procession of history at fixed points, to select some central theme at each stage, and to treat it in the light of history and law. In this attempt we arrived at a division of history from our point of view into three major periods which we have termed respectively those of the Prince, of the Judge, and of the Concert. In the first period, the scholar is still in the age of the dissolving Holy Roman Empire; in the second, commercial and dynastic wars - above all, the long-drawn-out struggle between France and England - dominate the scene; in the third and last, it is the voice of some force other than that of pure nationalism which, whatever the reason, reasserts itself. No division of this kind can be wholly satisfactory, but it is our belief that under one or another of these headings almost every issue which has interest for the historian of the Law of Nations can be conveniently treated." -- from the Preface by the author.
The Historiography of Gladstone and Disraeli
This book traces the often sharply differing perspectives historians have formed with regard to the key incidents in the careers of the two foremost politicians of the Victorian age – Gladstone and Disraeli. Following the parallel careers of both men, it focuses upon a series of contentious questions, ranging from why Disraeli opposed Corn Law repeal in 1846 and Gladstone abandoned his High Tory politics for Peelism, to whether Disraeli was ever an Imperialist and why Gladstone took up the cause of Irish Home Rule. By juxtaposing the contrasting interpretations advocated by historians, it brings home to students how history is a continually evolving subject in which every generation poses new questions, or reformulates answers to old ones – encouraging those studying the subject to realise that history is an ongoing dialogue to which they are called upon to contribute.
