The book follows the major tracks of Sabine Kacunko ́s artistic development which commenced with analogue b/w photography, slide photography and photographic installations and led to interactive light and closed circuit video installations, media performances and permanent installations. The range of the presented works also covers audio and networked sculpture and choreography as well as performances and projections in public spaces, conceived for and accomplished in collaboration with major cultural heritage sites and scientific institutions, media partners and diplomatic offices. With Sabine Kacunko's bacteria art in mind, alleged contradictions between the cultural and natural heritage- and health-issues have become the focus of attention. Today the media arts not only address the great themes of our times, they inhabit the very media of which they speak. The contemporary is global, but only because of the media that enable globalisation. Those media are almost nowhere apparent in the mainstream practice of art that we see in biennials from Venice to Sao Paolo. The media arts reflect back to us our present condition, and in the archive present us with the ghosts of what we were, and what we failed to become. This book brings the reader into the centre of these strange encounters, introducing us to the rich legacies and futures of the most important arts of the last hundred years. Artists and creators in interactive art and interaction design have long been conducting research on human-machine interaction. Digital technologies have profoundly impacted the arts and expanded the field of sculpture since the 1950s. Art history, however, continues to pay little attention to sculptural works that are conceived and ‘materialized’ using digital technologies. How can we rethink the artistic medium in relation to our technological present and its historical precursors?
