Feast
The companion to a one-of-a-kind exhibition at the University of Chicago's Smart Museum of Art, Feast: Radical Hospitality in Contemporary Art explores the role of the meal in contemporary art. Feast offers the first survey of the artist-orchestrated meal: since the 1930s, the act of sharing food and drink has been used to advance aesthetic goals and foster critical engagement with the culture of the moment. Both exhibition catalogue and reader, this richly illus- trated book offers an interdisciplinary exploration of the art of the meal and its relationship to questions about hospitality, politics, and culture. From the Italian Futurists' banquets in the 1930s, to 1960s and '70s conceptual and performative work, to the global prevalence of socially engaged practices today, Feast considers a diverse group of artists who have transformed the meal into a compelling artistic medium. After an introductory essay by curator Stephanie Smith, the book includes new interviews with over twenty contributing artists and reprinted excerpts of classic texts. It also features a selection of contextual essays contributed by an international group of critics, writers, curators, and scholars.
The Classical Collection
The Smart Museum's Classical collection began developing in the 1890s and now consists of approximately eight hundred pieces, including large-scale statuary and floor mosaics, vases, figurines, coins, lamps, and other utensils. The first extensive study of the Smart's collection, this catalogue presents a selection of the museum's antiquities and provides a historiographical introduction that traces the formation of the collection in relationship to the pedagogical ideas of the University of Chicago. Serving as a factual and functional guide, this catalogue serves classicists and art historians, as well as the museum's many visitors.
Smart Collecting
The Smart Museum of Art's “Smart Collecting” exhibition runs from July 8 through September 5, 2004. The David and Alfred Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago celebrates its thirtieth anniversary with this lively and richly illustrated catalog of recent acquisitions by the museum. Published in conjunction with the museum’s "Smart Collecting" exhibition, this full-color volume is an up-to-date and essential reference to the collections of one of the country’s most innovative university art museums. Vision and Communism
In the last thirty years of the Soviet Communist project, Viktor Koretsky’s art struggled to solve an enduring riddle: how to ensure or restore Communism’s moral health through the production of a distinctively Communist vision. In this sense Koretsky’s art demonstrates what an “avant-garde late Communist art” would have looked like if we had ever seen it mature. Most striking of all, Koretsky was pioneering the visual languages of Benetton and MTV at a time when the iconography of interracial togetherness was still only a vague rumor on Madison Avenue. Vision and Communism presents a series of interconnected essays devoted to Viktor Koretsky’s art and the social worlds that it hoped to transform. Produced collectively by its five editors, this writing also considers the visual art, film, and music included in the exhibition Vision and Communism, opening at the Smart Museum of Art in September 2011.

Looking to Learn
Looking to Learn, an exhibition at the Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago, challenges the decontextualized approach to images and learning by setting ritual, functional, and intentionally aesthetic objects side by side, together with inventories, technical viewing devices, photographs of ceremonial practices deploying the objects, printed materials representing them, and records and fragments of some of the environments to which they have belonged. The resulting installations probed the ways in which objects, artifacts, and images have been collected, deployed, and exhibited in teaching, research, and self-representation from the earliest days at the University.
