Submersible Technology: Adapting to Change

To maintain quality in research output, providing the necessary new knowledge for our developing industries must be of prime importance to our community. This is an extremely difficult task when viewed in the context ofthe rapid rate of change being experienced within our national industrial scene. Collaborative research programmes designed to constantly monitor and improve the quality of output, through regular reporting and assessment of achieved goals against defined targets, can help the growth of our industry and benefit the rest of society. The government has established initiatives to encourage collaboration and the transfer of technology between the research and development domains. ...

c. P. Wroth, Oxford University, UK I am grateful to the Organising Committee that were covered on the first day. First, we for the invitation to attempt to sum up the had Dr Riemersma talking about positioning proceedings. Summing up is not really the requirements, and it seemed to me to be an appropriate phrase - it is a difficult job to unhappy reflection on human frailty that he do justice in a summary to the amount of was concentrating so much on the errors in material that has been presented over the the system and on the human factors that two days of the conference. Clearly, each led to trouble, emphasizing that the techni paper merits further individual attention in ques are vastly s...

Developments in Diving Technology

Up to about 30 years' ago diving activity was centred primarily on the naval services, who provided a lead in the development of equipment, techniques and procedures. Apart from one or two spectacular salvage undertakings, the main commercial activity up until that time was fairly low-key work in docks and harbours. The concept of saturation diving emerged from subsea habitats of which Captain Cousteau was one of the pioneers. This led the way to commercial development in support of exploration and the production of offshore oil and gas, and I believe that my friend Henri Delauze was one of the first to mount the subsea habitat on deck and provide a sealed bell to convey divers from the habi...

SUBTECH ’91

The concept of using flexible, reelable pipe to transport liquids, gases, and vapours is not a new one. As early as the 1940s a steel braided elastomeric pipeline was developed for the Allied Forces in order to transport fuels to support the Normandy Beacheads. In fact, the longest flexible pipeline ever constructed is likely to be that laid across the English Channel as part of 'Operation Pluto'. The methodology used to handle and instal such pipe is also not new. Ellis (1943, London) in an early patent specification identifies three basic objectives for a flexible pipelining method. These are: prefabrication of the pipe onshore; coiling of the pipe on suitable drums or reels; and using suc...

ROV ’86: Remotely Operated Vehicles

There is now an awareness within the industry, particularly as oil companies direct considerable resources towards developing diverless production systems, that a fully integrated approach to equipment design and intervention is necessary to achieve an acceptable system. The requirement for an integrated approach to equipment design and intervention is applicable not only to diverless depths but to all subsea structures, equipment and intervention techniques in whatever depth. Fortunately the inherent dexterity of the diver does not impact so severely on design as other intervention techniques. However the benefits of an integrated approach are still applicable and the use of such simple "di...

Offshore Site Investigation and Foundation Behaviour

Two main areas of offshore activity are addressed in this book: Site investigation on assessment; and Applications and foundation engineering. The 37 contributions from a wide ranging group of international experts, are resulting from the Offshore Site Investigation and Foundation Behaviour Conference, London, U.K., September 1992. Adequate determination of site conditions can only be achieved by the integrated approach of using geological, geophysical and geotechnical data. Developments in data acquisition techniques are illustrated through case histories in the section on Geotechnical Sampling and Testing. In the section on Advanced Interpretation Techniques and Integrated Interpretations ...
