Manganese Mineralization

Manganese Mineralization

Manganese mineralization is diverse in occurence, origin, mineralogy and geochemistry. This volume includes a review of the range of terrestrial Mn deposits and their relative abundance through geological time. Experimental and modelling approaches to Mn geochemistry and mineralogy can further aid our understanding of the formational and depositational processes involved and thereby our interpretation of deposit metallogenesis.

Proterozoic East Gondwana

This volume focuses on Late Mesoproterozoic to early Cambrian events related to Gondwana assembly and break up. The nineteen papers provide a comprehensive review including advanced knowledge and new data from all critical areas of East Gondwana. The recent knowledge of the evolution of East Gondwana, which was regarded as an integral part of the Mesoproterozoic supercontinent Rodinia, is the major theme of the volume, which is reinforced by highlighting this radical and new understanding of the evolution of this region.

Crustal Evolution of India and Antarctica

Crustal Evolution of India and Antarctica

The Proterozoic aeon involved at least three major continental readjustments. India and Antarctica appear in most models of supercontinent reconstructions, but their relative position has been the subject of debate. High-resolution petrological and geochronological data, especially from the Proterozoic mobile belts, provide the principal means of resolving this issue. The ice-covered nature of Antarctica allows only limited access to the rocks, and then only in coastal tracts, so detailed studies in more accessible Proterozoic terrains in India assume added significance. This volume, a follow-up to the XII International Symposium on Antarctic Earth Science, Goa (a SCAR symposium), provides new data from selected locations in east Antarctica (Enderby Land and Dronning Maud Land) and from India, including the Eastern Ghats Mobile Belt (EGMB), Chota Nagpur Gneissic Complex, the Khasi Hills and the Aravalli–Delhi Mobile Belt. The presented geochronological data, constrained by petrological studies, are expected to provide new insights, especially into the EGMB–east Antarctica connection and the rate of continental readjustments in the post-Rodinia break-up.

Physics and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior

The Indian National Science Academy was established in January 1935 with the objective of promoting science in India and harnessing scientific knowledge for the cause of humanity and national welfare. In 1968 it was designated as the adhering organisation in India to the International Council for Scientific Union (ICSU) on behalf of the Government of India. Over the years, the Academy has published a number of journals, volumes, biographical memoirs, etc. The year 2009–2010 will be specially celebrated to mark the Platinum Jubilee of the Academy. Many programmes are planned in different centres in India on this occasion. In addition, the Academy has decided to publish a number of special v...

A Homeland For Your Children

Sunil was only six years old when he learnt that he was a Hindu—not the best of tags in his birthplace, Bangladesh. Friends turn hostile over that one realization and the child Sunil resigns himself to a life as a punching bag. As if this abuse of their only son was not enough, the Acharya family’s life is shattered one day by a terrible tragedy and they leave their home in Gaibadh overnight for a new life in India. The new life in his adopted motherland takes Sunil on an unheard-of journey, a journey you will identify every step with and pray it has not happened. One day, when he was only 39, doctors tell him that he has just a month to live. His was a life wasted. There is only one hope for him: he had learnt as a priest that every soul is given a chance to redeem itself and earn a place in Krishna’s abode. Will it hold true for him? Woven into the life of Sunil and his family are questions critical to the future of Hindus in India. Is the path of non-violence a recent invention or has it been around for ages? What does Krishna tell us about being non-violent or tackling adharmis? Are Hindus facing an existential crisis in their own land?

Petrology

This undergraduate textbook on the key subject of geology closely follows the core curriculum adopted by most universities throughout the world and is a must for every geology student. It covers all aspects of petrology, including not only the principles of petrology but also applications to the origin, composition, and field relationships of rocks. Although petrology is commonly taught in the junior year, this book is a useful resource for graduate students as well.

This book presents findings from research into the Precambrian history of the Indian shield obtained using state-of-the-art technology. It demonstrates a paradigm shift towards studying the Precambrian shield regions using petrological, geochemical, structural, metallogenic, sedimentological and paleobiological data from the rocks in the Precambrian shield area, and presents a collection of contributions on these diverse topics that help to reconstruct the Precambrian evolution of the Indian Shield.

This book presents in a concise format a simplified and coherent geological-dynamical history of the Indian subcontinent (including Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Southern Tibet and Pakistan). Encompassing a broad array of information related to structure and tectonics, stratigraphy and palaeontology, sedimentation and palaeogeography, petrology and geochemistry, geomorphology and geophysics, it explores the geodynamic developments that took place from the beginning around 3.4 billion years ago to the last about 5,000 years before present. Presented in a distilled form, the observations and deductions of practitioners, this book is meant for teachers, researchers and students of geology, geophysics and geomorphology and practitioners of earth sciences. A comprehensive list of references to original works provides guidance for those seeking further details and who wish to examine selected problems in depth. The book is illustrated with a wealth of maps, cross sections and block diagrams — all simplified and redesigned.

Heat and Mass Transfer Phenomena in MHD Flow: Modelling with Applications

The primary objective of the book is to provide basic idea on fluid dynamics and its related properties and help to understand research work in the field of transport phenomena in MHD flow. The fluid model describing various aspects of boundary layer flow past a vertical flat surface embedded in Darcian porous media have been studied. An asymptotic periodic transformation is used to solve the dynamical equations. The influence of several physical effects like thermal radiation, chemical reaction, magnetic field, radiation absorption, heat sink etc. have been considered on various fluid properties. In this study some significant engineering properties of interest such as skin-friction, Nusselt number and Sherwood number are also calculated and analyzed through graphs and tables. It is expected that, the governed exact closed form of solutions corresponding to different problems can be used for validating numerical treatment of certain critical flows with heat and mass transfer phenomena.
