Frédérick Lemaître was one of the most famous French actors of the 19th century. He played most of his career on the 'Boulevard du Crime', which was the nickname given to the Boulevard du Temple in Paris because of the many crime melodramas that were shown every night in its many theaters. He created the role of Robert Macaire in "L'Auberge des Adréts" and was immediately famous. He then wrote and starred in a sequel, "Robert Macaire" which led to collaborations with Balzac, Hugo, and Lamartine. Other dramatists created roles made to his measure, yet he was never welcomed into the "official" theaters of France. An actor of immense range, he was considered to be superior to all his contemporaries. He belonged to an extravagant age, and he behaved on and off the stage like the true Romantic hero he was.
