This is the true story of the History of the Demolition of the 2 Cooper River bridges . The Grace was complete in August,1929 and the Pearman was completed in 1966. They allowed traffic to flow between Charleston, South Carolina and Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. The Grace was built in 18 months, was a toll bridge and shortly after it was completed the country went into a deep depression. The Silas N. Pearman bridge was built to ease the high traffic demands that came with the growth of the area. It was a 3 lane bridge, where the Grace was 2 very narrow lanes. They were being replaced by a new higher span bridge named The Arthur Ravenel Bridge. A cable stay suspension bridge that is much higher for ships to travel underneath it better. The 2 Old Cooper River Bridge's we removed because they were rusting badly and obsolete. The contractor was Cashman/ Testa and they we responsible for the complete removal of all the steel and concrete above and below the water, up to 40 feet. Sparky Witte recorded the history of the removal for over 2 years. This is a coffee table book with the story and pictures of what took place during that time!

New York Times bestselling author Dorothea Benton Frank evokes a lush plantation in the heart of modern-day South Carolina—where family ties and hidden truths run as deep and dark as the mighty Edisto River.... Caroline Wimbley Levine always swore she’d never go home again. But now, at her brother’s behest, she has returned to South Carolina to see about Mother—only to find that the years have not changed the Queen of Tall Pines Plantation. Miss Lavinia is as maddeningly eccentric as ever—and absolutely will not suffer the questionable advice of her children. This does not surprise Caroline. Nor does the fact that Tall Pines is still brimming with scandals and secrets, betrayals and lies. But she soon discovers that something is different this time around. It lies somewhere in the distance between her and her mother—and in her understanding of what it means to come home....

Surfing in South Carolina

For centuries, the ocean waters of the Atlantic have impacted the daily lives of those on the South Carolina coast. Beginning in the 1960s, those waves caught the imagination of young beachgoers who studied magazines and Super 8 films and refined their moves on rent-a-floats until the first surfboards became available in the area. The buildup to the Vietnam War brought GIs and their families from the West Coast and Hawaii to South Carolina, and their surfboards came along with them. Unbeknownst to each other, local surfers concentrated in the beach and military base areas of Beaufort/Hilton Head, Charleston, and Pawley's Island/Grand Strand began to conquer nearby surf breaks. When contests finally brought these groups together, a statewide sport was born.
