Over the past twenty years, two parallel phenomena have triggered a rapid acceleration and a significant leap forward in architectural technology: the systematic use of CAD / CAM systems for design and production designing and the collective awareness on energy /environmental emergency. The first was the principal cause of a greater freedom in controlling and managing complex morphologies, as in design as well in production. The second has instead imposed a deep rethinking of the role of technology in architecture, introducing the parameters of the environment and energy as fundamental paradigms to empower the meaning of technology as fundamental tool in the design process. The book surveys this phenomenon, considering technology not only as a tools, but also as instrument able to define the changing of form and language in design as well as in architecture.

Technological Imagination in the Green and Digital Transition

This open access book addresses the pressing need for sustainability in urban development and the use of technology, with cities to serve as the main stage for strategies that seek to meet the targets and the cross-sector priorities indicated in the EU’s Next Generation program, all in pursuit of a solid recovery on the part of the European economy, along lines of ecological transition, digitalization, competitiveness, training, and inclusion to overcome social, territorial, and gender differences. The international study encounter is meant to promote visions shared by architectural technology and other disciplines, which, though they may appear to differ, are closely interconnected, with the aim of achieving an open, interdisciplinary integration capable of proposing concrete projects regarding topics held to be of strategic importance to the future of the built environment. These are identified to draw up evolving scenarios of architecture and cities suited to reflection, at various levels, on innovative models of process and product.

Australian lectures

This book contains the two formal lectures delivered by the authors at the University of Melbourne as part of the 2010 Miegunyah Distinguished Visiting Fellowship Program, and an anthology of essays written during the last ten years. These writings formed the basis for the academic activities undertaken in Australia during the residency at the Melbourne School of Design. CLAUDIO D'AMATO GUERRIERI is full Professor of Architectural Design and the current Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at the Polytechnic of Bari, which he founded and first headed in 1990. Between 2003 and 2009, he was the Director of the Program in Architecture and Industrial Design within the same Faculty. He was previou...

Computational Science and Its Applications – ICCSA 2023 Workshops

This nine-volume set LNCS 14104 – 14112 constitutes the refereed workshop proceedings of the 23rd International Conference on Computational Science and Its Applications, ICCSA 2023, held at Athens, Greece, during July 3–6, 2023. The 350 full papers and 29 short papers and 2 PHD showcase papers included in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 876 submissions. These nine-volumes includes the proceedings of the following workshops: Advances in Artificial Intelligence Learning Technologies: Blended Learning, STEM, Computational Thinking and Coding (AAILT 2023); Advanced Processes of Mathematics and Computing Models in Complex Computational Systems (ACMC 2023); Art...

Contested Legacies

In the light of the current housing and environmental crisis and increasing social inequalities, there is a growing sense of urgency for architecture as a discipline to engage with the transformation in housing evident in the postwar period. Rather than conceiving this task as a technical matter, this book proposes to reassess the conditions and legacy of this large and ubiquitous housing stock. By foregrounding the mismatch between constructed cultural, social and ideological narratives and the everyday realities of residents, the contributors rediscover some of the tropes of modern housing, such as the impact of technological innovations or the often overlooked character of open spaces, an...

Contemporary architectonic envelope between language and construction

Through two critical contributions, this text looks at the evolution and roles that have been assumed today by the facade envelope in contemporary architectonic output. The ever-more radical separation between structure and shell entrusts to the latter the expressive and communicative functions of the building. This appears to represent a belated victory for that Bekleidung prinzip which, though first expressed a century ago, opened the discussion on an articulated and problematic phenomenon, whose basis we can investigate today with technical knowhow and new theoretical knowledge. The evolutionary dynamics of the processes of planning and building in architecture, external factors related to the marketplace and the production of new materials filled with untapped expressive potential, the increase in the demand for results and performance of the building system, all these have had their influence on the phenomenon.

L’ARCHEOLOGIA DEL GRAPHIC NOVEL

L’ARCHEOLOGIA DEL GRAPHIC NOVEL

The archaeology of the graphic novel does not shed light on the historical origins of the comic book; on the contrary, it tries to discover the conceptual genesis of this narrative form. If the research methodology is archaeological, in fact, the theoretical approach is the same as neuro-narratology, in the light of which four important stages are suggested. These stages define the comic novel as a "natural" literary genre, a mimesis of the process transposing reality into images and constituting the basis of thought. The figure of Rodolphe Töpffer is not excluded from this process. Thanks to his theories and his work, he leads us to hypothesize that the comic book was more "novelistic" at its origin than it is in its current forms: the path to the novel, then, would not be so much of an evolution, but rather a return to the origins.

Thresholds in Architectural Education

The book explores, discusses, and considers new and innovative perspectives on the crossings, interactions, and transformations of non-formal, informal learning, and formal learning within or prior to FADS and Internship. The contributions provide a wider perspective on the alternating Final Architectural Design Studios and Internship programs as interfaces and interaction zones among different learning experiences that lead to professional and intellectual qualification.
