Archetype
Commonly dismissed as mystical by scientists, archetypes were described by Jung as biological entities, which have evolved through natural selection, and which, if they exist at all, must be amenable to empirical study. Anthony Stevens has discovered the key to opening up this long-ignored scientific approach to the archetype.
Living is Risky
It has been suggested that the best hope for achieving a longer and healthier life lies in voluntary efforts derived from personal choices. This means that individual change must be directed toward the modification of lifestyles and the choices associated with them. Every lifestyle is a complex of related attitudes, habits, and other behaviors that, in essence, constitute a death style. Each death style in turn carries with it various degrees of risk-taking. Our survival potential both in terms of quality and longevity is significantly enhanced or diminished by certain attitudes and habits and their associated risks. This dimension of survivor education is a central focus of this book. While it largely concentrates on individual culpability, the societal context is also emphasized. Indeed, threats to our welfare often come from institutional or corporate activities that are beyond our control.
Vascular Dynamics
The function of the vascular system is to transport oxygen and nutrients to the cells and to remove carbon dioxide and metabolites. It also transports hormones and locally produced neurohumoral substances which, in part, regulate its own function. These interrelationships are essential to homeostasis. The vascular system is not an assembly of simple (elastic) tubes but a dynamic system with many external and intrinsic regulatory mechanisms. The endothelium plays a major role in the intrinsic regulation of the system. The system is also often subject to disease processes of which atherosclerosis is the most important. As a result of atherosclerosis, and other disease processes, replacement of vessels with prosthetic devices may be required to reestablish adequate tissue blood flow. It is therefore imperative to gain insight into the details of vascular function, especially the dynamics, and the endothelium, the processes of atherosclerosis development, the vascular prosthetic possibilities and, last but not least, the interrelationships between these sub-specialties.

Post-War Eugenics, Reproductive Choices and Population Policies in Greece, 1950s–1980s
This book sheds light on the history of Greek eugenics during the post-war period. At this time, eugenics had already been condemned by international declarations. Alexandra Barmpouti, however, challenges the assumption that eugenics disappeared and confirms the continuity of eugenics after the Second World War. She looks at the Greek paradigm because it included the establishment of a eugenics society in 1953 and revealed the contact of Greek eugenicists with renowned British and American birth control advocates. The book covers for the first time the untold history of contraception in Greece during the 1950s and 1960s when the use of female contraceptives was forbidden. It thus argues that birth control was ideologically based on eugenics. In the same context, the book discusses significant breakthroughs related to eugenics, such as the rise of the feminist movement and the advance of human genetics that took place during this period.

Explorations in Child Psychiatry
It is a great pleasure for me to write a foreword to thi~ fine work by many dif ferent collaborators under the aegis of my friend and one-time colleague in Geneva, Dr. E. James Anthony, because it represents a collective effort toward a goal that today seems very necessary yet difficult to attain. This goal is the synthesis of developmental psychology with all the other aspects of child psychology into a science of ontogenetic development from birth to maturity encompassing three points of view-the biological, the behavioral, and the internalization of the behavioral into mental life. This synthesis is indeed necessary since it is not possible to understand a disorder or a developmental arrest without having a sufficient knowledge of l the ensemble of elements that has brought it about. At each level of development, the personality of the subject attempts to integrate a multiplex system of factors in varying proportion, and without carefully and fully considering this interdigitating whole, it is not easy to disentangle the mechanisms involved in any particular functional disintegration.

Archetype: A Natural History of the Self, first published in 1982 was a ground-breaking book; the first to explore the connections between Jung's archetypes and evolutionary disciplines such as ethology and sociobiology, and an excellent introduction to the archetypes in theory and practical application as well.
