On the first anniversary of the departure of H.H. Pope Shenouda III, we would like to present to you a collection of books written by His Holiness which contains His contemplations on Holy Week. This book is made up of five different booklets that His Holiness published in different years. This book takes you through the events of this great and holy week and helps the reader to participate in every step of Christ's passions. This book first appeared in the late sixties in the Arabic language and has since been reprinted many times. It consists of five booklets that have been combined into one book. Perhaps contemplations on the Holy Week of Pascha needs many more books as it is the holiest week in the year, filled with great spiritual memories which are impossible to gather in one book. Contemplations on the Holy Week of Pascha are suitable at any time of the year, as the suffering of our Lord Jesus Christ is the foundation of our Christian faith. We remember the suffering of our Lord Jesus Christ every day in the sixth hour prayer of the Agpya. Therefore, we present these contemplations in your hands and also pray deep in your hearts.
The liturgy can be confusing at times, or even sometime boring. When we understand what the liturgy is and what we do in different sections our experience of the liturgy becomes very different. The point of this book is not to try and capture all the detailed descriptions and contemplations on the liturgy. Instead, the purpose of this book is to help those of us who sometimes struggle to connect with God and one another through the liturgy to understand and follow this great feast. This book is a great resource for individual reading or as a resource for a Sunday school class discussion to help teens understand and start to interact with the liturgy. It is full of illustrations, fun facts and sayings of the church fathers to help teens understand and enjoy the liturgy.
The Great Lent is divided into seven weeks, each commencing with a significant event on Sunday. Each week holds a significant event in the life of Christ from which we can extract meaning and apply a practical message to our own lives.
Spiritual Canon is an extensive and broad subject. It is not limited to the Canonical prayers or the Lord's prayer or even genufl ecting, (Matania), neither is it the reading of the Bible and spiritual books, nor adhering to the Sacraments of Confession and Eucharist. It is more intense than that.We should not be concerned only with the external appearance of the Spiritual Canon: counting how many times we prayed or how well recited. More importantly is the spirit by which we carry our spiritual practices.May our Lord enlighten us and bestow on us His grace to practice these Rules. May the Holy Spirit pave the path and help us in our spiritual walk all the days of our lives.
"The Paradise of the Fathers" is the classic compilation of the lives and teachings of the early monastic saints. It has been translated from a Syriac manuscript discovered in 1888.
St Annasimone was a Queen who desired to dedicate her life to God. She loved reading the stories of the saints as a child, and so followed their example all her life. Upon leaving the kingdom, and going to the wilderness, she lived humbly amongst nuns in a convent while hiding her identity.
International specialists in Coptology examine various aspects of Coptic civilisation in Wadi al-Natrun over the past 1700 years. Their studies centre on aspects of the history and development of monasticism in Wadi al-Natrun, as well as the art, architecture, and archaeology of the four existing and numerous former monastries of the region.
History tells of political and social unrest in Egypt around the time of President Anwar Sadat n 1981. President Sadat exiled His Holiness Pope Shenouda to the monastery of St Bishoy on 3 September 1981. What followed was the imprisonment of several Bishops and laymen without justifiable cause in what became a very unsettled time in Egypt. The conditions of their imprisonment were abominable. They were subjected to horrid living standards and psychological warfare from their guards and interrogators. This book recounts a translation of extracts from the personal memoirs from people who were with His Holiness Pope Shenouda and Bishop Beimen as well as accounts from Bishop Benyamin, Father Boules Basili and Father Youssef Asaad. It relays very personal and moving accounts of human emotions which they experienced during these tumultuous times. The extracts also tell of their faith, the power of prayer and their own experience of God's guiding hand to marshal their release.
The monastic life was an integral part of H.H. Pope Shenouda III, not only as a monk but also as a patriarch. As a patriarch, he was very careful to spend as much time as he could in the monastery among the monks. In the 1980's during his house arrest at St Bishoy's Monastery, he used to sit with the monks and teach them the monastic life as he lived it. This book is a collection of these sermons which encapsulate Pope Shenouda's true monastic life and teaching that is invaluable for today. These sermons are translated for the first time into the English language and we hope will be of benefit to all.
St Bishoy, a well renowned saint of the 4th century, grew up amongst six other brothers. When he was young, his mother had a vision in which an angel revealed to her that the Lord had chosen Bishoy to serve Him as a special vessel of grace. He embarked on his journey of monasticism at the young age of twenty years old, and from there continued to grow from glory to glory. He is most renowned for his strong ascetic struggle and the Lord Jesus' numerous apparitions to him, including even being carried by him. The story of St Anba Bishoy is a largely beloved one amongst Christians. The fact that he is also known as 'St Bishoy the Perfect Man', highlights the importance of reading his story and learning from it. St Bishoy the Beloved of Christ, written from the perspective of his brother, aims to instil a holy zeal in every child that picks up this book, showing them that God is both real and very close to His children.
