The Undiscovered Country, the second part of Stan Erisman’s autobiographical sixpart book series called Hindsights, begins where NaturalShocks left off: with Norm and Stan’s busride across the American West, from Chicago to San Francisco in June 1964. Unlike Norm, Stan has to struggle to make a clean break with his upbringing as a Fundamentalist Christian. But both young men revel in their new-found freedom, while meeting the challenges of finding jobs, housing and companionship in a totally new environment– and drifting apart. That fall, Stan meets Jeanette, his first great love. He also causes a senseless rift with Norm, and takes his first university course. Stan’s mom does everyt...
The unbearable loss of Jeanette throws Stan’s life into anguished chaos in the opening chapters of A Sea of Troubles, the fifth and penultimate book in the Hindsights series. With his lust for life demolished, the only things keeping him alive are his inability to believe in anything but living, and his vital friendship with Bob. Desperately trying to run before he can walk, Stan falls deeply in love with Lena, and is driven to the brink of suicide – and to an unexpected catharsis. After a year of booze and smoke, Stan regains a little balance thanks to Bob and to the warm companionship of others, but is unable to banish Lena from his mind and life. In the war of attrition between their ...
Natural Shocks, the first in the autobiographical six-part book series called Hindsights, covers the childhood of Stan Erisman, a gregarious American boy, in a Chicago suburb called Oak Park in the 1950s. Stan’s parents are naturally loving, but the strictness of their beliefs and the pressure from the Plymouth Brethren, a Christian Fundamentalist sect, compels them to heap layer after layer of religious indoctrination upon their three sons, of whom Stan is the youngest. Struggling to live a normal life, Stan is forced to become an outsider, so as not to have to mingle with “unbelievers” – the rest of the human race. Triggered by his passionate interest in the Indians, Stan begins to...
No Traveller Returns is the third book in Hindsights, Stan Erisman’s autobiographical six-part book series. On arriving in Sweden, Stan and Jeanette face daunting challenges: getting permission to stay, finding a home, learning a new language from scratch and finding jobs, all while trying to find equilibrium in a new environment. Stan gets his draft notice and declines the “invitation”; returning to the US is thereby no longer an option. While working to make a new life for themselves in Sweden, Stan and Jeanette meet Bob, Stan’s eldest cousin, who lives in Switzerland. His life and health are a train wreck, but his great humanity and intelligence shine through, and mutual friendshi...
The arrival of two wonderful daughters does a great deal to make up for Stan’s feeling obliged to bring his painting career to an untimely end, but all his efforts to save his marriage prove futile. Perchance to Dream, the sixth and final book in the six-part Hindsights series charts the slow disintegration of that doomed relationship. Fortunately, Stan has by this time discovered the therapeutic value that writing has had for him in his life’s crises. Now, with two small children depending on him, he sorely needs a swift recovery – without the help of booze. Writing about his crisis helps him structure his thoughts, deal with his problems and achieve a new and stronger will to live. W...
Readers would perhaps be justified in thinking that Slings and Arrows, the fourth book in the Hindsights series, should be given a warning text regarding its emotionally wrenching content. This is that warning. Having overcome the many obstacles to settling down in Sweden, Stan and Jeanette achieve (at least temporarily) the free and simple life they’d been seeking. Stan enters the most intensive and productive period in his painting, by far, with Jeanette’s strong moral support and urging. But once again, external circumstances threaten their equilibrium: Stan’s dad dies suddenly and Stan’s draft orders are cancelled, almost simultaneously; their first trip back to the US a year lat...
The First International Nitrogen Conference provided an opportunity for researchers and decision-makers to exchange information on environmental pollution by nitrogen compounds on three scales: global, continental/regional and local. The main topics were air, ground water and surface water pollution; emission sources, atmospheric chemistry, deposition processes and effects; disturbance of nitrogen cycles, critical loads and levels; assessments, policy development and evaluation; target groups and abatement techniques; and new approaches leading to an integrated abatement strategy. The peer-reviewed papers from the Conference presented in this volume will provide readers with a comprehensive review of the transport, deposition and impact on ecosystems of nitrogen.
