Craftworkers in Nineteenth Century Scotland
Explores how artisans and hand skills evolved against a background of technical and commercial modernisation in Scotland This book examines individuals, families and communities of craftworkers and their changing experience in town and country. Based on case studies drawn from personal, business, institutional and official records, as well as newspaper reports and visual illustrations, it looks at workplace dynamics and handmade wares shaped by personal consumption, rather than industrial production. Stana Nenadic examines the 'things' that were made and the values they embodied at a time when most Scots were still engaged in hand making - either for income or pleasure - despite Scotland's emergence as a great industrial powerhouse. Stana Nenadic is Professor of Social and Cultural History at the University of Edinburgh.
Lairds and Luxury
This book is a critical account of the social, economic and cultural experience of consumption and luxury of the Highlands. It looks at all classes and various professions, finally looking closely at the Highland gentry during a period of significant change. The subject is inspired by a commonly articulated moral criticism of the gentry – that they were more luxurious and feckless than similar groups elsewhere and that their conspicuous consumption ultimately ruined the Highland economy and destroyed Highland social relationships. The book contains both male and female experiences and expectations, using an anthropological approach to uncover the social meaning of the changing material environment that the Highland gentry inhabited – their houses, their clothing and their possessions. An anthropological perspective is also applied to the knowledge practices of the Highland gentry – what they knew; the processes whereby they came to posses that knowledge through education, professional training or life-experience; and the application of that ‘knowledge’ to the creation of their culture.
Scots in London in the Eighteenth Century
Scots in London in the Eighteenth Century is an interdisciplinary collection of essays that explores, through the experiences of individuals and groups ranging from James Boswell and his circle at one end of the social spectrum to highland folk musicians at the other, the reasons why Scottish men, women, and children made the long journey south to London and their reactions to the great metropolis once there. Through the varied approaches of historians and art historians, literature specialists and musicologists, this book addresses a series of interconnected themes that include the group dynamics that gave rise to periodic "Scotophobia" but also generated a distinct form of Scottish social capital and eventual integration; patronage, as a type of social relationship particular to the age and to the capital city; cultural production, both high and popular; and the making of Scottish identity in London, along with the impact of London-forged Anglo-Scottish identity on Scotland and on evolving notions of "Britishness." Stana Nenadic is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh.
