Urban Environment
Over half of the global population now lives in cities. This ongoing urbanisation is making it increasingly important to adequately manage urban systems and preserve urban environments. This book is the outcome of the 11th Urban Environment Symposium (UES) held on 16-19 September 2012 in Karlsruhe, Germany. The UES aims at providing a forum on the sciences and practices needed to promote a sustainable future in urban environments. Papers by leading experts are presented in sections on Urban Management and Spatial Planning, Green Cities and Urban Ecosystems, Urban Planning and Development, Air Quality and Noise, Urban Climate Change and Adaptation, and Contamination of Urban Waters and its Effects.
Highway and Urban Environment
The 9th Highway and Urban Environment Symposium (9HUES) was held in Madrid, Spain, from 9-11 June 2008. HUES is run by Chalmers University of Technology within the Alliance for Global Sustainability (The AGS). HUES was initiated by Professor Ron Hamilton at Middlesex Polytechnic (now University) in the early 1980s and had the title "Highway Pollution". The initial aim was to measure and assess challenges in highway pollution, with a strong emphasis on urban photochemical smog, ozone formation and particle release. Arsenic in groundwater of West Bengal: Implications from a field study
This publication presents results of an interdisciplinary field study assessing the contribution of biological and inorganic processes in the mobilisation and accumulation of arsenic in groundwater of the Bengal Delta Plain, West Bengal. Investigations were focussed on the distribution of arsenic in sediments and shallow groundwater of two representative study sites. All results were combined in an effort to develop a conceptional model describing the mobility of arsenic in West Bengal aquifers.
Selenium Isotope Studies in Plants - Development and Validation of a Novel Geochemical Tool and its Application to Organic Samples
Selenium (Se), being an essential nutrient and a toxin, enters the food chain mainly via plants. Selenium isotope signatures were proved to be an excellent redox tracer, making it a promising tool for the exploration of the Se cycle in plants. The analytical method is sensitive on organic samples and requires particular preparation methods, which were developed and validated in this study. Plant cultivation setups revealed the applicability of these methods to trace plant internal processes.
Strengthening Resilience of Supply with Essential Goods through Public-Private Emergency Collaborations: Challenges and Incentives
Companies can be valuable partners in delivering essential goods but must be appropriately motivated to participate in humanitarian crisis management. This work provides valuable insights into the status of humanitarian crisis management from the perspective of different stakeholders. It shows the potential of collaborative approaches, addressing the strengths and incentives of stakeholders accordingly.
Arsenic Mobilization Processes in the Red River Delta, Vietnam
The spatial variability of dissolved arsenic (As) concentrations in aquifers was studied near Ha Noi, Vietnam. The goal was to identify major geochemical, sedimentological and hydrochemical differences between high and low As regions. Also, the behaviour of As and other elements during sequential extractions was characterized with micro synchrotron XRF analysis. Based on the results a conceptual model was developed which could explain the current situation on site and in other affected areas.
Resilience in Ecology and Health
This edited book is a collection of essays addressing emerging concerns and pivotal problems about our planet’s environment and ecology. Separating arsenic oxyanions from natural waters for oxygen isotope analysis
This study has developed a complete procedure for the measurement of oxygen isotopes in arsenic oxyanions in natural waters by using different adsorbents. The experimental results of kinetic exchange of oxygen between AsO43- and water show that the entire exchange procedure happens in a very short time at different pH conditions and temperatures.
Selenium Transfer between Kaolinite or Goethite Surfaces, Nutrient Solution and Oryza Sativa
The aim of this study was to describe and quantify Se transfer at the interface between soil and plant. For this purpose, three Se reservoirs were defined: soil, soil solution and plant, represented by kaolinite or goethite, nutrient solution and rice. First, Se transfer from solution to plant and Se partitioning in the plant was studied; then adsorption-desorption processes of Se onto kaolinite and goethite were investigated. Finally, a mass balance of the combined experiment was modelled.
