Quantum Information

Quantum information- the subject- is a new and exciting area of science, which brings together physics, information theory, computer science and mathematics. "Quantum Information"- the book- is based on two successful lecture courses given to advanced undergraduate and beginning postgraduate students in physics. The intention is to introduce readers at this level to the fundamental, but offer rather simple, ideas behind ground-breaking developments including quantum cryptography, teleportation and quantum computing. The text is necessarily rather mathematical in style, but the mathematics nowhere allowed priority over the key physical ideas. My aim throughout was to be as complete and self- contained but to avoid, as far as possible, lengthy and formal mathematical proofs. Each of the eight chapters is followed by about forty exercise problems with which the reader can test their understanding and hone their skills. These will also provide a valuable resource to tutors and lectures.

Methods in Theoretical Quantum Optics

This work presents the mathematical methods widely used by workers in the field of quantum optics. It deals with the physical assumptions which lead to the models and approximations employed, but the main purpose of the text is to give a firm grounding in those techniques needed to derive analytical solutions to problems.

Spin angular momentum of photons and the associated polarization of light has been known for many years. However, it is only over the last decade or so that physically realizable laboratory light beams have been used to study the orbital angular momentum of light. In many respects, orbital and spin angular momentum behave in a similar manner, but t

We Had One of Those! celebrates New Zealand's golden age of motoring, from the 1950s through to the 1970s, with a selection of cars that Kiwis loved and drove during that period. Although these cars are no longer common on New Zealand roads and are rarely seen, they are still held in fond regard. This book is literally a nostalgic drive down memory lane. The selection of 36 cars is illustrated using the evocative artwork of sales brochures of the times. Accompanying the brochure artwork are texts for each car that mix technical descriptions with social history and nostalgia. These are cars that we, or our parents and grandparents owned, cars with a gloriously wide-ranging diversity of design...

The Quantum Phase Operator

Describing the phase of an electromagnetic field mode or harmonic oscillator has been an obstacle since the early days of modern quantum theory. The quantum phase operator was even more problematic with the invention of the maser and laser in the 1950s and 1960s. This problem was not solved until the Pegg-Barnett formalism was developed in the 1980

Discrete Mathematics

For the increasing number of students who need an understanding of the subject, Discrete Mathematics: Numbers and Beyond provides the perfect introduction. Aimed particularly at non-specialists, its attractive style and practical approach offer easy access to this important subject. With an emphasis on methods and applications rather than rigorous proofs, the book's coverage is based an the essential topics of numbers, counting and numerical processes. Discrete Mathematics: Numbers and Beyond supplies the reader with a thorough grounding in number systems, modular arithmetic, combinatorics, networks and graphs, coding theory and recurrence relations. Throughout the book, learning is aided an...

In an original synthesis of communication theory and their own research and experience as intervention agents, the authors of Moral Conflict describe a dialectical tension between the expression and suppression of conflict that can be transcended in ways that lead to personal growth and productive patterns of social action. Several projects are described as practical examples of these ways of working.
