The Correspondence of Stephen Fuller, 1788-1795

The Correspondence of Stephen Fuller, 1788-1795, offers a much-needed accounting of how slavery supporters in Britain managed to preserve the slave trade in Jamaica during the last two decades of the 18th century. Represents the best single source on the efforts in Britain to prevent the abolition of the slave trade in Jamaica in the late 18th century Offers background context for Fuller’s letters and provides new information about the effectiveness of the West India interest in Britain’s houses of parliament Provides the fullest accounting of the campaign orchestrated by Jamaica and other Caribbean islands to turn back the abolitionist attack on the slave trade and plantation regime Features a wealth of information about the slave trade, the conditions in which Jamaican slaves lived and worked, the racial attitudes of planters and their overseas representatives Reveals the efforts made by Fuller to appease the abolition movement through modest steps to deflect criticisms of the planter regime

‘Post-truth’ was Oxford Dictionaries 2016 word of the year. While the term was coined by its disparagers in the light of the Brexit and US presidential campaigns, the roots of post-truth lie deep in the history of Western social and political theory. Post-Truth reaches back to Plato, ranging across theology and philosophy, to focus on the Machiavellian tradition in classical sociology, as exemplified by Vilfredo Pareto, who offered the original modern account of post-truth in terms of the ‘circulation of elites’. The defining feature of ‘post-truth’ is a strong distinction between appearance and reality which is never quite resolved and so the strongest appearance ends up passing for reality. The only question is whether more is gained by rapid changes in appearance or by stabilizing one such appearance. Post-Truth plays out what this means for both politics and science.

The Intellectual

"Steve Fuller's book dissects what it means to be an intellectual. What distinguishes them from philosophers, scientists, politicians or entrepreneurs? Why are they happy to be insulted as long as they are not ignored? Why do they thrive on conflict? And why is Batman the intellectual's favourite superhero?" "As well as a history of the intellectual from Ancient Greece to post-9/11, Steve Fuller also provides an essential guide to the species. Think you would recognise an intellectual when you saw one? Entertain hopes of intellectualism yourself? Meet exemplars from the past - Voltaire, Sartre, Norman Mailer or Bertrand Russell - alongside many living examples in this original road-map to the intellectual life."--BOOK JACKET.

This work discusses whether Kuhn's The Structure of Scientific Revolutions was revolutionary. Steve Fuller argues that Kuhn held a profoundly conservative view of science and how one ought to study its history.

Fuller's Dictionary of Daffynitions

'Fuller's Dictionary of Daffynitions' is THE lexicon for all students of wordplay... an Aladdin's cave of double entendre and innuendo; an encyclopaedia of equivoque; an arsenal of ammunition for exponents of bon mots, burlesque and badinage... a veritable punsters' paradise.

Thomas Fuller

Long considered a highly distinctive English writer, Thomas Fuller (1608-1661) has not been treated as the significant historian he was. Fuller's The Church-History of Britain (1655) was the first comprehensive history of Christianity from antiquity to the upheavals of the Protestant and Catholic Reformations and the tumultuous events of the English civil wars. His numerous publications outside the genre of history--sermons, meditations, pamphlets on current thought and events--reflected and helped to shape public opinion during the revolutionary era in which he lived. Thomas Fuller: Discovering England's Religious Past highlights the fact that Fuller was a major contributor to the flowering...
