The Legend of Charlemagne in Medieval England

The first full-length examination of the medieval Charlemagne tradition in the literature and culture of medieval England, from the Chanson de Roland to Caxton. The Matter of France, the legendary history of Charlemagne, had a central but now largely unrecognised place in the multilingual culture of medieval England. From the early claim in the Chanson de Roland that Charlemagne held England as his personal domain, to the later proliferation of Middle English romances of Charlemagne, the materials are woven into the insular political and cultural imagination. However, unlike the wide range of continental French romances, the insular tradition concentrates on stories of a few heroic character...

Catalogue of Choral Music Arranged in Biblical Order

This second edition of Laster's Catalog combines in one volume the listings from the first catalog with the voluminous material that has appeared since 1973, more than doubling the number of citations. It is designed as an aid for the church musician and/or pastor seeking to plan unified worship services. It will also be of use to those church musicians who follow the Liturgical Calendar and plan music appropriate to the appointed lessons, as well as a source for non-church choir directors who would like to locate choral settings based on a particular passage from Scripture. Entries are arranged from Genesis through Revelation. Each main entry citation provides the biblical reference (book, ...

Georgian Edinburgh

Thomas H. Shepherd was one of the most prolific architectural and topographical illustrators of the early 19th Century. His original paintings formed the basis of many steel engravings that would show how cities would develop from the late Georgian period. This volume is dedicated to work drawn from his sketching tour of Edinburgh in the late 1820's as that city was beginning to develop a colossal new town that remains visible to this day. It contains 75 illustrations of buildings and views of Georgian Edinburgh taken as the new town was being established. This collection is brought together by the author, Stephen Brown, and put in one volume, allowing the reader to seek out remaining buildings and views around "auld reekie". Shepherd is noted for his attention to detail and methodical approach. Consequently, these steel etchings from his paintings are instantly recognisable by anyone who has visited Edinburgh even up to the modern day.
