This report describes a method by which an optimal control problem with a compact, connected control region may be transformed into what is called a psi-equivalent Lagrange problem in the calculus of variations. The notion of psi-equivalence is explained and a condition sufficient to guarantee the psi-equivalence of two problems is stated. In particular, it is shown that an optimal control problem with a closed parallepiped control region can, after an appropriate transformation, always be treated as a Lagrange problem.
