The Oath

A brutal killer lurks near Hyde River in the Pacific Northwest. When wildlife biologist Steve Benson is called in to investigate the latest murder, he discovers that the victim is his brother. But why are the terrorized townspeople silent—and unwilling to help? Something evil is at work in Hyde River, an isolated mining town in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest. Under the cover of darkness, a predator strikes without warning—taking life in the most chilling and savage fashion. The community of Hyde River watches in terror as residents suddenly vanish. Yet, the more locals are pressed for information, the more they close ranks, sworn to secrecy by their forefathers’ hidden sins. Only when Hyde River’s secrets are exposed is the true extent of the danger fully revealed. What the town discovers is something far more deadly than anything they’d imagined. Something that doesn’t just stalk its victims—it has the power to turn hearts black with decay as it slowly fills their souls with darkness. Voices of Yugoslav Jewry

Voices of Yugoslav Jewry emphasizes the role of history in shaping Yugoslav Jewish identity. World War II imposed irreversible effects on this population of Jews, leaving them with an acute sense of disjuncture and fragmentation. This once-unified Jewish community lost its secure place in the politico-symbolic order of a single multiethnic state, and the surviving local Jewish communities, which are now a part of new states, face the task of refashioning their identities once again. The process of creating the new Yugoslavia has allowed for the emergence of a new Jewish collective voice, one that blended harmoniously with the emerging voice of Tito. This collective voice manifested itself by using language, material culture, and dramaturgical performances in ways that exhibited high public integration with the symbolic order of the new state. In searching for the voices of individuals and listening to them closely, a wide range of diverse individual experiences and ways of constructing meaningful Jewish selves can be heard. It is these voices that constitute the core of the book.

You were a high-potential individual contributor. Your skills were valued. You received great performance reviews, a few raises, and promotion into management. Then things soured. The road to the top became a glass ceiling. Others passed you by. You worried about your job security. You are not alone. You are a sergeant major, and you are struggling to understand why your good efforts dont lead to equally good outcomes. In The Sergeant Major Syndrome, authors Roy Jacques and Mary Hobson seek to help you to understand and deal with these dynamics. Written by a former organizational sergeant major and a manager of sergeant majors, The Sergeant Major Syndrome is both a diagnostic tool and an action plan. It helps you understand what a sergeant major is, and it outlines a plan for strategizing what you can do about being (or not being) a sergeant major. Jacques and Hobson describe what the sergeant major can do to thrive in the tribal organization and how he or she can be valued at the project level. It also provides advice on advancing into the officer corps. Stop pressing your face against the glass ceiling and find the stairs.
