There is currently a great deal of interest in crime prevention and how it can be reduced through better design. Design for a Secure Residential Environment provides the framework on which the risk of crime can be reduced through sensible design of the vulnerable parts of houses, community buildings and small commercial premises and the environment immediately surrounding the buildings. This book looks at how buildings should be assessed for security measures. It then looks at the design of external and communal areas, how lighting can improve security and then covers methods of making doors and windows secure. It describes various methods of electronic security and concludes with a chapter on how to plan and implement suitable security measures.

A Statistical History of Rugby League -

The “Greatest Game of All” or Rugby League as it is known to some has given me nearly a half a century of pleasure and a little pain. In 1966 at the ripe old age of 6 I was introduced to our game when my Uncle Harry moved into the bedroom I shared with my younger brother in a 2 bedroom fibro joint in Rockdale (Dragon Territory). Harry was playing lower grades for Jack Gibson’s Roosters and went on to play for St George in the 1971 Grand Final against my other front rower mate John Sattler and his Rabbitoh’s. By the age of 9 I had memorized every player in the Big League magazine. The game became my obsession. Even if I had not been lucky enough to play over 100 games in the best comp...

Performance Anxiety

He is sixteen in 1964. He has friends. He has fun. He smokes unfiltered Luckies. He loses his virginity. He gets his first car and drives with abandon. He is growing up as fast as he can, if not as fast as he wants. A white boy from the suburbs, he goes into the Black city to see the Motown Revue, and to listen to jazz in smokey clubs. Inspired by the non-violent civil rights movement, he embarks on an activist path that in a few years will place him in the militant Weather Underground. He has sex with girls, hiding the unmentionable fact that he is gay. His father is checked out while his mother is dying—another thing that may not be discussed. He pretends he doesn't care, projecting himself as a worldly proto-adult, but he is a scared kid. Performance Anxiety is a vivid portrayal of one boy’s rocky youth—and of America on the brink of the cultural tumult known as “the sixties.” With rare honesty and humble self-forgiveness Jonathan Lerner recalls the exuberance and pain of growing up in a time and place, and family, that seemed whole but were cracking apart.

Practical Aspects of Declarative Languages

Declarative languages build on sound theoretical bases to provide attractive frameworks for application development. These languages have been succe- fully applied to a wide variety of real-world situations including database m- agement, active networks, software engineering, and decision-support systems. New developments in theory and implementation expose fresh opportunities. At the same time, the application of declarative languages to novel problems raises numerous interesting research issues. These well-known questions include scalability, language extensions for application deployment, and programming environments. Thus, applications drive the progress in the theory and imp- mentation of declarative systems, and in turn bene?t from this progress. The International Symposium on Practical Applications of Declarative L- guages (PADL) provides a forum for researchers, practitioners, and implementors of declarative languages to exchange ideas on current and novel application - eas and on the requirements for e?ective use of declarative systems. The fourth PADL symposium was held in Portland, Oregon, on January 19 and 20, 2002.
