Permanently improvised

From multi-colored patchwork identities composed of collaged faces, via halftone murals painted dot by dot, or vivid paper castings of monuments, through to smashed smartphones used as intaglio plates - the duo finds ever new and specific forms of expression in each of their series. Throughout it all, their love for paper is obvious, and this first book is long overdue. Just in time for the anniversary exhibition of Various & Gould in the Berlin Urban Spree Gallery, this monograph presents the full range of their work, enriched by essays by selected authors. About the artists: The artist duo Various & Gould has been an integral part of Berlin's Urban Art scene for the past 15 years. In a playful and unconventional way, the two artists tackle major social issues such as diversity, migration and work.

Examine the cultural and political implications of male-to-female gender performance! The Drag Queen Anthology: The Absolutely Fabulous but Flawlessly Customary World of Female Impersonators examines the phenomena of male-to-female gender performance and the people who live it. This provocative collection of original essays explores the possibilities, limitations, ironies, and controversies surrounding men who perform as women to an audience that knows the truth but celebrates the illusion. The book’s contributors call on extensive backgrounds in sociology, anthropology, theater, literature—even military studies—and use a variety of approaches to address common themes and genres of pre...

Caribbean and Latinx Street Art in Miami

  • Categories: Art

This study focuses on street art and large-scale murals in metropolitan Miami/Dade County, while also foregrounding the diasporic and aesthetic interventions made by migrant and second-generation artists whose families hail from the Caribbean and Latin America. Jana Evans Braziel argues that Caribbean and Latinx street artists define and visually mark the city of Miami as a diasporic, transnational urban space. These artists also help define Miami as a cosmopolitan city, yet one that is also a distinctly Caribbean and Latinx urban space, and simultaneously resist but also (at times reluctantly) participate in the forces of gentrification and urban re/development, particularly through the myriad and complex ways in which street art contributes to city branding and art tourism. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, urban studies, American studies, and Latin American/Caribbean studies.
