When Law and Medicine Meet: A Cultural View

What happens when two systems, law and medicine, are joined in the arena of the court? This work deals with the structure and the premises of two diverse discourse models; the approach is anthropological. Several chapters are preponderantly based on legal research, addressing cases requiring testimony by expert witnesses on recent technologies used in the laboratories of medical scientists. Descriptions of other societies and cultures consider the identical problems of rights, privileges, and duties, and provide perspectives to cultural self-knowledge. This volume can be used as a text for courses taught in medical schools and law schools. It will be of particular interest to students taking courses in health science, public health, medical anthropology, forensic anthropology, psychology, sociology, public justice, behavioral sciences, forensic psychiatry, legal anthropology, social welfare, as well as courses on research models.

Recovering International Relations

Surveying six decades of scholarship, Recovering International Relations suggests new ethical and methodological foundations for the study of world politics. IR is conceived as a vocation; one that must balance the insights of normative and empirical theory against each other to address a densely populated, heavily armed, and persistently diverse world.

Like coffee, I was perking I had something that I wanted to say that I had not said in my first book, An Ode to Satire. I wanted to say more about the Simpsons saga. Many had indicated and with good reason - that the Simpsons trial was a very good sampling of the world that we lived in thinking that it was a matrix of race and color, money and influence, sports, etc.; but I also knew that every lifes matrix in America, was not a monolithic one that it was more of a compilation of many American factions, and a mixture of Americas human complications religion, faith, race, and past history. Those who had indicated that the Simpson Trial was simply a sampling of the world we live in, had some premise of value - but it goes deeper than the surface. That case in evidence had sparked an ongoing nature of our society at large - especially at that time in the late 1990s, just as it has now; and not to forget that most all are immigrants in this country, from almost every nation in the world not meant to be an indictment however; but

In Psychotherapy Reflections a psychoanalytically-informed patient describes his feelings about his therapeutic relationship and critically examines selected therapy sessions from a nine-month course of treatment. Many texts about psychotherapy are based either on patient narratives or on a clinical model. Psychotherapy Reflections, however, combines patient narrative with probing insight and dream analysis based on the work of noted dream researcher Stanley R. Palombo, M.D., who has shown that dreams serve an information-processing function by matching present and past experience in determining what information will be filtered through for storage in permanent memory.

August Harder is the primogenitor of the Harder family in Arkansas. He came as a child of five to the Sugarloaf valley in southern Sebastian County with his uncle and aunts. Forced by the depredations of marauders in the Civil War to move into Fort Smith, he married, had a family, and remained there the rest of his life. Around 1899 August began a family history and continued it until the last entry three months before his death in 1920. It is his history that forms the basis of this present work. The author places August and Louise and their family into the milieu of nineteenth century western Arkansas. He provides a synopsis of Augusts ancestors and shows how his family and descendants have flourished from pioneer days to present times.

Conductor: Distributed Adaptation for Heterogeneous Networks

Internet heterogeneity is driving a new challenge in application development: adaptive software. Together with the increased Internet capacity and new access technologies, network congestion and the use of older technologies, wireless access, and peer-to-peer networking are increasing the heterogeneity of the Internet. Applications should provide gracefully degraded levels of service when network conditions are poor, and enhanced services when network conditions exceed expectations. Existing adaptive technologies, which are primarily end-to-end or proxy-based and often focus on a single deficient link, can perform poorly in heterogeneous networks. Instead, heterogeneous networks frequently r...
