This is the second and final issue of the collection of papers that were contributed by friends and colleagues of (Late) Professor P. R. "Pat" Sethna of the University of Minnesota to commemorate his 70th birthday on May 26, 1993. The first set of contributions was published in Nonlinear Dynamics as the last issue (no. 6) of Vol. 4 in 1993. As circumstances would have it, Professor Sethna was diagnosed with cancer in the fall of 1992 and, after an extended battle with the disease, he passed away on November 4, 1993, just a few days before the first set of contributed papers appeared in print. It is gratifying to report that the organizers of these vi Foreword commemorative issues in Nonlinea...
The nonlinear normal modes of a parametrically excited cantilever beam are constructed by directly applying the method of multiple scales to the governing integral-partial differential equation and associated boundary conditions. The effect of the inertia and curvature nonlin earities and the parametric excitation on the spatial distribution of the deflection is examined. The results are compared with those obtained by using a single-mode discretization. In the absence of linear viscous and quadratic damping, it is shown that there are nonlinear normal modes, as defined by Rosenberg, even in the presence of a principal parametric excitation. Furthermore, the nonlinear mode shape obtained wit...
The papers in this volume present rules for mechanical models in a general systematic way, always in combination with small and large examples, many from industry, illustrating the most important features of modeling. The best way to reach a good solution is discussed. The papers address researchers and engineers from academia and from industry, doctoral students and postdocs, working in the fields of mechanical, civil and electrical engineering as well as in fields like applied physics or applied mathematics.
Adopting a cross-disciplinary approach, the review character of this monograph sets it apart from specialized journals. The editor is advised by a first-class board of international scientists, such that the carefully selected and invited contributions represent the latest and most relevant findings. The resulting review enables both researchers and newcomers in life science, physics, and chemistry to access the most important results in this field, using a common language.

This book gathers the proceedings of the 15th IFToMM World Congress, which was held in Krakow, Poland, from June 30 to July 4, 2019. Having been organized every four years since 1965, the Congress represents the world’s largest scientific event on mechanism and machine science (MMS). The contributions cover an extremely diverse range of topics, including biomechanical engineering, computational kinematics, design methodologies, dynamics of machinery, multibody dynamics, gearing and transmissions, history of MMS, linkage and mechanical controls, robotics and mechatronics, micro-mechanisms, reliability of machines and mechanisms, rotor dynamics, standardization of terminology, sustainable energy systems, transportation machinery, tribology and vibration. Selected by means of a rigorous international peer-review process, they highlight numerous exciting advances and ideas that will spur novel research directions and foster new multidisciplinary collaborations.
