Sir Herbert Baker
This is the first full biography from childhood of the eminent British Architect Sir Herbert Baker. Written with the full cooperation of his family and with access to his archive and private papers, it gives an account of his remarkable life as the leading architect to the British Empire. From London, through the commemoration of the empire's war dead in France, via South Africa and Australia to India, he celebrated the might of an empire that once ruled a quarter of the world. He was an intimate friend of many of most fascinating men of his age, including Cecil Rhodes, Lawrence of Arabia, John Buchan, Jan Smuts and, of course, his fellow architect Sir Edwin Lutyens. After a Victorian architectural apprenticeship in London and on to becoming the most prolific architect of his age in South Africa, he built the new imperial capital of New Delhi in India with Lutyens, before returning to London. These built or rebuilt such landmark buildings as the Bank of England, South Africa House, India House, Rhodes House, and the stands for Lords Cricket Ground, as well as numerous churches and private houses.

Consciousness and Matter
This volume represents a collective effort to advance research on the perennial problem of matter and consciousness, body and mind. It contains contributions from the fields of philosophy, psychology, physiology, cosmology, and physics. However, its distinctive emphasis is on the key role of theology. The modern natural sciences historically arose as an attempt to read the second book of God—that is, the book of Nature. The contributors to this volume maintain that this orientation of early modern science was correct and that our contemporary understanding of matter and its link with the psychic world can only be plausibly advanced through an appeal to theology. Attempts to resolve the problem of consciousness without theological insights yield problematic reductions of mind to matter or vice versa. The authors maintain that a Christian theological understanding of creation and of humanity provides a framework for a more fruitful way forward in our interdisciplinary attempts to engage the issue.

"In recent years, a number of works have appeared with important implications for the age-old question of the existence of a god. These writings, many of which are not by theologians, strengthen the rational case for the existence of a god, even as this god may not be exactly the Christian God of history. This book brings together for the first time such recent diverse contributions from fields such as physics, the philosophy of human consciousness, evolutionary biology, mathematics, the history of religion, and theology. Based on such new materials as well as older ones from the twentieth century, it develops five rational arguments that point strongly to the (very probable) existence of a god. They do not make use of the scientific method, which is inapplicable to the question of a god. Rather, they are in an older tradition of rational argument dating back at least to the ancient Greeks. For those who are already believers, the book will offer additional rational reasons that may strengthen their belief. Those who do not believe in the existence of a god at present will encounter new rational arguments that may cause them to reconsider their opinion."
