James Wellman was conducting a seismic survey for World Oil in an area called the Reed Table Mount. It is across the ocean deep Palawan Trough from Palawan Island of the Philippines. A typhoon destroyed their ship and it was thought all was lost until they received a demand for ransom from a pirate who claimed to have a "round-eye" for trade in return for platinum bars to buy him a metal ship. Rescue efforts led to island confrontations, and finally to Bugsuk Island where a love affair between the Indonesian seismic boat steersman and the pirate's daughter added to their deepening conflict.

Human Rights in Eastern Civilisations

Based on the author's first-hand experience as a UN Special Rapporteur, this thought-provoking and original book examines the values of Eastern civilisations and their contribution to the development of the UN Human Rights agenda. Rejecting the argument based on “Asian Values” that is often used to undermine the universality of human rights, the book argues that secularism, personal liberty and universalism are at the heart of both Hindu and Buddhist traditions.

Towards Cleaner Entrepreneurship

This book brings together research related to sustainability, green, and eco-entrepreneurship to explore what the author describes as cleaner entrepreneurship, which also links to social issues and public policy. Particularly in emerging markets, public policies have encouraged the co-creation of sustainable entrepreneurial activities. It begins by discussing sustainable entrepreneurship in the context of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) and presents global perspectives of entrepreneurship and social consciousness. It then presents a framework describing how sustainable entrepreneurship can address issues such as poverty, access to healthcare, and gender inequality. The book closes by laying out future standpoints of green entrepreneurship and how global-local partnerships will encourage reverse innovation and collective business development projects.

State Administrative Law in Indonesia

  • Categories: Law

This book examines Indonesian laws regulating state administration, in other words, the relationship between the Indonesian government and its citizens. This book uses public administration science to explain state administrative law. It covers the historical evolution of state administrative law in Indonesia, the political and legal acceptance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in Indonesia as well as the ratification of the 2020 Omnibus Law reforms. It evaluates both the benefits and drawbacks of establishing laws through the Omnibus Law model, and the challenges of its adoption by the Indonesian statutory system. The book also examines state administrative law in other Southeast Asian countries, to provide a more nuanced understanding of how human rights implementation occurs in the respective legal regimes. Covering the legal reforms and changes to state administrative law in Indonesia, this book will be of keen interest to scholars of state administrative law, public administration, and constitutional law.
