The Extra-Terrestrial Delivery

In this third episode of the 'Planet Hoola' Science Fiction Romance series, author Sudipta Das traces the evolutionary path of the ascent of the alien Hoo race, on a far away planet. In this work, the author has wonderfully combined the entire spectrum, from Physics to Metaphysics, and merged poetry into prose to intriguingly illustrate the Big Picture. His realisations are telling and connect easily. A celestial comet is horrendously hurled towards Hoola, on a direct collision course. The collision could potentially wipe out all life on the uniquely colourful planet, including the technologically advanced Hoos. The impending calamity notwithstanding, the Hoos find themselves faced with yet another predicament that creeps up from within themselves. Meanwhile, silently blossoms love. Will the Hoos come around to overcome both the external and the internal obstacles that threaten their very existence? Or will they crumble under the weight of their own spectacular and vibrant, but often divisive, diversity?

This book offers a systematic analysis of the violent clashes between the South Indian 'right' and 'left' hand caste divisions that repeatedly rocked the European settlements on the Coromandel Coast in the early colonial period. Whereas the Indian population expected the colonial authorities to intervene in the disputes, the Europeans were reluctant to get involved in conflicts which they barely understood. In the nineteenth century the significance of the divisions diminished, a development that has long puzzled historians and anthropologists. In addition, this study addresses the larger issue of the nature of colonial encounters. The rich material relating to these disputes convincingly demonstrates how Europeans and Indians, as they sought to incorporate each other into their own social structure and conceptual universe, participated in a dialogue on the nature of South Indian society.

Minimally Invasive Vitreous Surgery: 20 Gauge to 27 Gauge

The vitreous humour is a clear gel positioned behind the iris (coloured part) and the lens, and in front of the retina (back of the eye). Vitrectomy is the surgical removal of the vitreous humour, a procedure needed to allow ophthalmic surgeons to diagnose and treat underlying disease in the eye. Small gauge minimally invasive vitreous surgery (MIVS) allows ophthalmic surgeons to make smaller incisions, reducing the need for sutures and therefore increasing the speed of recovery. This practical book presents ophthalmic surgeons with the most recent advances in MIVS, with emphasis on the differences between gauge sizes. Beginning with an introduction to the technique and anaesthesia, the foll...

The Emergence of British Power in India, 1600-1784

Empires have usually been founded by charismatic, egoistic warriors or power-hungry states and peoples, sometimes spurred on by a sense of religious mission. So how was it that the nineteenth-century British Indian Raj was so different? Arising, initially, from the militant policies and actions of a bunch of London merchants chartered as the English East India Company by Queen Elizabeth in 1600, for one hundred and fifty years they had generally pursued a peaceful and thereby profitable trade in the India, recognized by local Indian princes as mutually beneficial. Yet from the 1740s, Company men began to leave the counting house for the parade ground, fighting against the French and the Indi...
