The Travels of Ibn Battuta, A.D. 1325-1354
Ibn Battuta was born in Tangier in 1304. Between 1324 and 1354 he journeyed through North Africa and Asia Minor and as far as China. On a separate voyage he crossed the Sahara to the Muslim lands of West Africa. His journeys are estimated to have covered over 75,000 miles and he is the only medieval traveller known to have visited every Muslim state of the time, besides the 'infidel' countries of Istanbul, Ceylon and China. Die Figur des Beduinen in der arabischen Literatur
Im Zentrum der Studie steht die Beduinenfigur, die im Kontext nomadisch-sesshafter Beziehungen untersucht wird. Sie erfullt bestimmte Funktionen im arabischen Diskurs: Aufgrund ihrer Ambivalenz und Ambiguitat eignet sich die Beduinenfigur in besonderem Masse dazu, heikle Themen anzusprechen und Standpunkte einzubringen, die die geforderte politische, religiose und soziale Anpassung subtil unterlaufen. Bislang fehlte jedoch eine monografische Arbeit, die die Beduinen als literarisches Phanomen analysiert. Die vorliegende Studie schliesst diese Lucke und stellt eine literarische Figur vor, die eine von ihrer Herkunft unabhangige eigene Wirklichkeit und Bedeutung im Diskurs erlangt hat.
