This book covers the recent research advancements in the area of charging strategies that can be employed to accommodate the anticipated high deployment of Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PEVs) in smart grids. Recent literature has focused on various potential issues of uncoordinated charging of PEVs and methods of overcoming such challenges. After an introduction to charging coordination paradigms of PEVs, this book will present various ways the coordinated control can be accomplished. These innovative approaches include hierarchical coordinated control, model predictive control, optimal control strategies to minimize load variance, smart PEV load management based on load forecasting, integrating renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic arrays to supplement grid power, using wireless communication networks to coordinate the charging load of a smart grid and using market price of electricity and customers payment to coordinate the charging load. Hence, this book proposes many new strategies proposed recently by the researchers around the world to address the issues related to coordination of charging load of PEVs in a future smart grid.

A static compensator (STATCOM), also known as static synchronous compensator, is a member of the flexible alternating current transmission system (FACTS) devices. It is a power-electronics based regulating device which is composed of a voltage source converter (VSC) and is shunt-connected to alternating current electricity transmission and distribution networks. The voltage source is created from a DC capacitor and the STATCOM can exchange reactive power with the network. It can also supply some active power to the network, if a DC source of power is connected across the capacitor. A STATCOM is usually installed in the electric networks with poor power factor or poor voltage regulation to im...

Renewable Energy Integration

This book presents different aspects of renewable energy integration, from the latest developments in renewable energy technologies to the currently growing smart grids. The importance of different renewable energy sources is discussed, in order to identify the advantages and challenges for each technology. The rules of connecting the renewable energy sources have also been covered along with practical examples. Since solar and wind energy are the most popular forms of renewable energy sources, this book provides the challenges of integrating these renewable generators along with some innovative solutions. As the complexity of power system operation has been raised due to the renewable energy integration, this book also includes some analysis to investigate the characteristics of power systems in a smarter way. This book is intended for those working in the area of renewable energy integration in distribution networks.

Reconstruction-Free Compressive Vision for Surveillance Applications

Compressed sensing (CS) allows signals and images to be reliably inferred from undersampled measurements. Exploiting CS allows the creation of new types of high-performance sensors including infrared cameras and magnetic resonance imaging systems. Advances in computer vision and deep learning have enabled new applications of automated systems. In this book, we introduce reconstruction-free compressive vision, where image processing and computer vision algorithms are embedded directly in the compressive domain, without the need for first reconstructing the measurements into images or video. Reconstruction of CS images is computationally expensive and adds to system complexity. Therefore, reco...

Power electronic converters can be broadly classified as AC to DC, DC to AC, DC to DC and AC to AC converters. AC to AC converters can be further classified as AC Controllers or AC regulators, Cycloconverters and Matrix converters. AC controllers and cycloconverters are fabricated using Silicon Controlled Rectifiers (SCR) whereas matrix converters are built using semiconductor bidirectional switches. This text book provides a summary of AC to AC Converter modelling excluding AC controllers. The software Simulink® by Mathworks Inc., USA is used to develop the models of AC to AC Converters presented in this text book. The term model in this text book refers to SIMULINK model. This text book i...

This book explores the behavior of networks of electric and hybrid vehicles. The topics that are covered include: energy management issues for aggregates of plug-in vehicles; the design of sharing systems to support electro-mobility; context awareness in the operation of electric and hybrid vehicles, and the role that this plays in a Smart City context; and tools to test and design massively large-scale networks of such vehicles. The book also introduces new and interesting control problems that are becoming prevalent in the EV-PHEV's context, as well as identifying some open questions. A particular focus of the book is on the opportunities afforded by networked actuation possibilities in electric and hybrid vehicles, and the role that such actuation may play in air-quality and emissions management.
