In face of rapid social and economic changes since the late 1970s, where is China transforming toward? If culture, in the form values, ideals, and ideological struggles, plays a key role in China’s latest round of social transformations, what are the cultural legacies and resources that are at play and in what ways they do so? This collection of essays aims at addressing these questions. Written by some of the leading intellectuals and thinkers, in and outside of contemporary China, these essays, in different ways, re-examine and reflect on the extent to which three major cultural legacies, namely traditional, May Fourth, and socialist, can function as cultural resources under the changed and changing social and economic conditions of the reform era.

Reinventing Modern China

This work offers the first systematic analysis of writings on modern Chinese history by historians in China from the early twentieth century to the present. It traces the construction of major interpretive schemes, the evolution of dominant historical narratives, and the unfolding of debates on the most controversial issues in different periods. Placing history-writing in the context of political rivalry and ideological contestation, Huaiyin Li explicates how the historians’ dedication to faithfully reconstructing the past was compromised by their commitment to an imagined trajectory of history that fit their present-day agenda and served their needs of political legitimation. Beginning wi...

The Chinese Maritime Customs Service, which was led by British staff, is often seen as one of the key agents of Western imperialism in China, the customs revenue being one of the major sources of Chinese government income but a source much of which was pledged to Western banks as the collateral for, and interests payments on, massive loans. This book, however, based on extensive original research, considers the lower level staff of the Chinese Maritime Customs Service, and shows how the Chinese government, struggling to master Western expertise in many areas, pursued a deliberate policy of encouraging lower level staff to learn from their Western superiors with a view to eventually supplanting them, a policy which was successfully carried out. The book thereby demonstrates that Chinese engagement with Western imperialists was in fact an essential part of Chinese national state-building, and that what looked like a key branch of Chinese government delegated to foreigners was in fact very much under Chinese government control.

This book is one out of 8 IAEG XII Congress volumes, and deals with the theme of applied geology, which is a critical theme for the global economy. In the international, multidisciplinary approach to major engineering projects (either to macro- or mega-scale), the application of geological investigation techniques is fundamental for properly selecting the location sites, planning the construction and maintaining the infrastructures. The contributions in this book include not only engineering constructions but also case studies related to large projects on geo-resources exploration and extraction (minerals, petroleum and groundwater), energy production (hydropower, geothermal, nuclear and oth...
