This groundbreaking reference work contains brief biographical articles for over two hundred women, most of them little known, who graduated from schools of medicine in the United States before the Civil War. The volume includes an introductory essay examining the social and religious backgrounds of the women graduates, as well as their motivations for becoming physicians and their varying degrees of success as practitioners. In addition, the essay offersinformation on what physician training and practice were like during the period, as well as on the need for reform that provided a setting for women's entry into the profession. The biographical entries are supplemented by a chronological table of female medical graduates and a geographical table indicating the places in which they practiced. Edward C. Atwater is emeritus professor of medicine and the history of medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine.

William Mervale Smith, surgeon of the 85th New York Volunteer Infantry, faithfully kept a diary of his Civil War experiences. Smith's introspective musings cover matters both professional and personal, from the horror of battle and the almost equally terrible politics of war to his deepest longings and questions about love and spirituality. While some diarists wrote self-consciously, anticipating eventual publication of their words, Smith's entries, as author Thomas Lowry explains, "are of such a personal and self-revelatory nature that we can reasonably conclude that he wrote to himself alone, as a sort of spiritual exercise of self-communication."

An encyclopedia of Tennessee genealogy, Acklen's "Bible Records and Marriage Bonds" is one of the foremost Tennessee source-books in print. It consists almost entirely of records of births, marriages, and deaths, plus marriage licenses of Dickson, Knox, Lebanon, and Wilson counties. Sections devoted exclusively to marriages generally run chronologically, giving exact dates and full names of brides and grooms. The bible records, however, offer the most substantial evidence of family connections and, in the manner of such records, are actually organic family records listing names and dates of birth, marriage, and death through several generations, depending, of course, on the extent to which a particular bible was handed on in the family and kept up to date. The work is complemented by a surname index of nearly 15,000 entries.
