Legendary Locals of Kent County

Kent County, located on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay, is noted for its farms, outdoor recreation, architecture, and its people. Legendary Locals of Kent County recognizes only a handful of the many Kent County people who deserve to be noted. Included are Tony Award-winning Mark Bramble, who is a director, author, and producer; controversial and colorful Evelyn Harris, also known as the "Barter Lady," who gained fame during the Depression when she proposed a system of swapping to overcome the shortage of money; elected official, school principal, minister, and artist Clarence Hawkins; Sheriff Bartus O. Vickers, who earned the respect of prisoners, lawyers, other law enforcement officers, and citizens; game warden Bozy Robinson, friend of both the hunter and the hunted; and writer Gilbert Byron, who detailed life on the Chesapeake Bay throughout the 20th century.

Society and Solitude

"Society and Solitude, published in 1870, was the first collection of essays Ralph Waldo Emerson had put into press since The Conduct of Life ten years earlier. Of the twelve essays included in the volume, he had previously published seven in whole or in part: "Society and Solitude," "Civilization," "Art," "Eloquence," "Domestic Life," "Books," and "Old Age." Emerson added five previously unpublished lectures or essays, "Works and Days," "Clubs," "Courage," "Success," and "Farming." This edition is based on Emerson's holograph manuscripts and published sources. The text incorporates corrections and revisions he recorded in both sources, and thus restores for the reader the text he actually wrote. Although he is still visibly the insistent optimist of his early and middle career, here Emerson assumes a more pragmatic attitude than formerly toward the life of the mind and the imagination. Society and Solitude captures the penultimate expression of Emersonian Transcendentalism and Romanticism."--Publisher's website.

Indiana University and the World

Indiana University's administration, faculty, and staff believe that an international reach is a central part of the teaching and research identity of a great university. Beginning with "summer tramps" led by faculty in the later 1800s, providing support to a struggling German higher education system devastated by World War II, partnering with Kenyan medical institutions, and collaborating with Ukrainian parliamentarians, IU has participated in a diverse range of international opportunities. What connects these seemingly disparate efforts is their reciprocal nature. IU's international activities have benefited countless lives while providing opportunities for the intellectual development of faculty and students. This commitment to international engagement continues into Indiana University's third century, with the launch of Gateway offices in economically and culturally dynamic parts of the world, such as China, India, Germany, and Mexico.
