Advances in Legume Research

Legumes crops have an extraordinary importance for the agriculture and the environment. In a world urgently requiring more sustainable agriculture, food security and healthier diets the demand for legume crops is on the rise. The International Legume Society (http://ils.nsseme.com) organizes a triannual series of conferences with the goal to serve as a forum to discuss interdisciplinary progress on legume research. The Second International Legume Society Conference (ILS2) hosted in October 2016 at Troia, Portugal was the starting point for the Research Topic “Advances in Legume Research” in FiPS, that was also open to spontaneous submissions.

Proteomics may be defined as the large-scale study of the proteome, i.e. a set of proteins being expressed in a certain fluid, tissue, organ or organism. Although still of limited and restricted use in most areas of farm animal and veterinary research, proteomics potential is unequivocal holding a significant promise in applications such as vaccine and drug development, animal product quality, physiology or toxicology. Nevertheless, proteomics use has been growing steadily during the last 2-3 years and, as time goes by; proteomics-based studies are more and more common, not just to scientists but to the general public, unraveling their full potential. This book reflects the will of a group o...

Proteomics is the large-scale study of the proteome, i.e. a set of proteins being expressed in a certain fluid, tissue, organ or organism. The value of this advanced technology is being recognised in farm animal and veterinary sciences from 'farm to fork'. The potential of proteomics is unequivocal in holding a significant promise in applications such as vaccine and drug development, physiology, toxicology, animal product quality and food safety. Proteomics has been growing steadily during the last 3-4 years and, as time goes by, proteomics-based studies are more and more common, not just to scientists but to the general public as well, unravelling the full potential of this innovative techn...

Rabbits have many uses - as well as being cherished pets, they are bred for their meat and fur, and as laboratory animals. Understanding their genetics and genomics is key to their production and, equally, to their care, welfare and health. Beginning with an introduction to the rabbit, including key information on their evolution, domestication and breed types, this book then concentrates on the genetics and genomics of this valuable animal. Concluding with practical applications such as creating transgenic and genome edited rabbits, biotechnical applications and the rabbit as a biomedical model, this book brings this important topic fully up-to-date. It provides an indispensable resource for animal and veterinary researchers and students, as well as rabbit breeders and laboratory scientists.

Transatlantic Fictions of 9/11 and the War on Terror

Extending the study of post-9/11 literature to include transnational perspectives, this book explores the ways in which contemporary writers from Europe as well as the USA have responded to the attacks on the World Trade Centre and the ensuing 'war on terror.' Transatlantic Fictions of 9/11 and the 'War on Terror' demonstrates the ways in which contemporary fiction has wrestled with anxieties about national and international security in the 21st century. Reading a wide range of novels by such writers as Amy Waldman, Michael Cunningham, Frédéric Beigbeder, Ian McEwan, Joseph O'Neill, Moshin Hamid, José Saramago, Ricardo Menéndez Salmón, J.M. Coetzee and Salman Rushdie, Susana Araújo exp...

With contributions from an international array of scholars, this volume opens a dialogue between discourses of security and hospitality in modern and contemporary literature and culture. The chapters in the volume span domestic spaces and detention camps, the experience of migration and the phenomena of tourism, interpersonal exchanges and cross-cultural interventions. The volume explores the multifarious ways in which subjects, citizens, communities, and states negotiate the mutual, and potentially exclusive, desires to secure themselves and offer hospitality to others. From the individual’s telephone and data, to the threshold of the family home, to the borders of the nation, sites of se...

Cryptococcus Neoformans

This volume explores the latest developments in the study of Cryptococcus neoformans and its pathology, along with discussion on newly used therapeutics. The chapters in this book cover a wide range of protocols commonly used in Cryptococcus research such as animal models, genetics techniques, virulence factor phenotyping, and microscopy. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Cutting-edge and thorough, Cryptococcus neoformans: Methods and Protocols is a valuable resource that will help researchers further enhance their understanding of this pathogenic yeast, and will aid in new discoveries and therapeutics. .

Soil salinity is a key abiotic-stress and poses serious threats to crop yields and quality of produce. Owing to the underlying complexity, conventional breeding programs have met with limited success. Even genetic engineering approaches, via transferring/overexpressing a single ‘direct action gene’ per event did not yield optimal results. Nevertheless, the biotechnological advents in last decade coupled with the availability of genomic sequences of major crops and model plants have opened new vistas for understanding salinity-responses and improving salinity tolerance in important glycophytic crops. Our goal is to summarize these findings for those who wish to understand and target the m...
