This volume presents the proceedings of ECSCW 2011, the 12th European Conference on Computer Supported Cooperative Work. Each conference offers an occasion to critically review our research field, which has been multidisciplinary and committed to high scientific standards, both theoretical and methodological, from its beginning. The papers this year focus on work and the enterprise as well as on the challenges of involving citizens, patients, etc. into collaborative settings. The papers embrace new theories, and discuss known ones. They contribute to the discussions on the blurring boundaries between home and work and on the ways we think about and study work. They introduce recent and emergent technologies, and study known social and collaborative technologies, such as wikis and video messages. Classical settings in computer supported cooperative work, e.g. meetings and standardization are also looked upon anew. With contributions from all over the world, the papers in interesting ways help focus on the European perspective in our community. The 22 papers selected for this conference deal with and reflect the lively debate currently ongoing in our field of research.
The Yearbook of Transnational History is dedicated to disseminating pioneering research in the field of transnational history. This fifth volume advances the frontier of transnational history into early modern times. The six chapters of this volume explore topics and themes from early modern times to the fall of Communism. This volume includes chapters about the Huguenots and Sephardi Jews as transnational nations in the seventeenth and eighteenth century, the construction of cannabis knowledge cultures in the transatlantic world of the nineteenth century, the role of the German pastor Martin Niemoeller in the construction of transnational religious identities in the aftermath of World War II, and the labor migration - from Cuba to East Germany - within the Socialist world in the 1970s and 1980s.
How Beuys combined his political, scientific, spiritual and artistic concerns into a compelling vision of "social sculpture" This book examines the crucial period between Joseph Beuys' (1921-86) return to his hometown of Kleve after World War II at the age of 24 and his appointment as a professor at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in 1961. During this "incubation" phase, key themes relevant to his future work emerged, which structure this book: biography as material for artistic formation; poetry/romanticism; natural sciences: physics, chemistry, botany, zoology and geography; philosophy/anthropology and Steiner; economics, capitalism, labor, politics. The aim of this book, along with the 2021 exhibition of the same name at Museum Kurhaus Kleve for which it is the catalog, is neither to venerate a local saint of Kleve nor to topple an artist from an earlier generation. Instead it highlights the influences and ideas that saw Beuys develop from a "sensitive traditionalist" into a "visionary social sculptor."
