These two volumes examine a significant but previously neglected moment in French cultural history: the emergence of French film theory and criticism before the essays of Andr Bazin. Richard Abel has devised an organizational scheme of six nearly symmetrical periods that serve to "bite into" the discursive flow of early French writing on the cinema. Each of the periods is discussed in a separate and extensive historical introduction, with convincing explications of the various concepts current at the time. In each instance, Abel goes on to provide a complementary anthology of selected texts in translation. Amounting to a portable archive, these anthologies make available a rich selection of nearly one hundred and fifty important texts, most of them never before published in English.

There are two layers to this story, past and present. A middle-aged teacher reflects upon her life and the fantasies and obsessions which have led her to make some seriously wrong decisions. And yet those same wrong decisions have led her, against all the odds, to meet the love of her life. From different races and contrasting backgrounds, the couple embark upon a new, exciting life together, at the dawn of the new millennium. Little do they know that they are about to unravel the mysteries of a secret past and discover a family, of whose existence they were completely unaware.

Traces the career of the influential French director and uses psychoanalytical concepts to analyze his major films.
This text exposes how Fado lyricists have appropriated popular novelist and playwright Julio Dantas' forging of Mouraria fadista/prostitute Maria Severa as a national heroine, and the Fado as Portugal's national song to manifest a sub-rosa criticism of the Estado Novo's demolition of the Mouraria between the 1930s and 1970s.
Mental imagery refers to the mental simulation or recreation of perceptual experience across different sensory modalities. The exploration of mental imagery represents a new and important area within clinical psychology, but arguably one still in its infancy. While mental imagery has featured prominently in recent theoretical accounts of disorders as diverse as post-traumatic stress disorder, phobia, body dysmorphic disorder, mood disorders, and psychosis, there remains an insufficiently strong theoretical and methodological foundation to enable comparison of the role of imagery across such different disorders. The current research topic presents a diverse range of cutting-edge papers focusi...
