Most knowledge about adolescent development is based on adolescents living in the United States or Europe. "The Thoughts of Youth" reports a study in which over 6000 adolescents from 20 regions of the world, including the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia, described an ideal woman or ideal man. Adolescents' images of the ideal person reflect their personal values about gender roles, their expectations and plans for the future, and their cultural values. "The Thoughts of Youth" presents the teenagers’ perspectives - their descriptions, drawings, and interpretations of their peers’ responses. Issues of importance to adolescent development are addressed, including morality and altruism, physical appearance and attractiveness, self and identity, intelligence and schooling, work, fun and leisure, family relationships, and romance. In contrast to the stereotype that adolescents are preoccupied with appearance and popularity, adolescents in this study endorsed kindness, honesty, helpfulness, and a positive attitude toward children. This book documents both the universal attitudes of adolescents and the ways that teenagers’ views differ by gender, culture, and economic condition.

The Old Maid

History lovers will revel in Balzac’s social and political commentary of 19th century France in ‘The Old Maid’. With skilful insight into the human experience, the life of a rich lady and her respective suitors reveal themselves page after page. A short and snappy read, Balzac crafts his characters with expert skill, peppered with satirical misfortunes. Part of his ‘The Human Comedy’ collection, ‘The Old Maid’ is ideal for fans of Xavier Giannolli’s 2021 ‘Lost Illusions’ film. Honoré de Balzac (1799-1850) was a French novelist and playwright, most famous for his collection of novels and plays named ‘The Human Comedy’. Celebrated today as one of the greatest French writers and founders of realism, his works capture detailed observations of humanity and post-Napoleonic French society. A master creator of realistic characters who navigate complex webs of moral and social dilemmas, Balzac’s work has inspired BBC series starring Helen Mirren and Margaret Tyzack.

CHAPTER I. ONE OF MANY CHEVALIERS DE VALOIS Most persons have encountered, in certain provinces in France, a number of Chevaliers de Valois. One lived in Normandy, another at Bourges, a third (with whom we have here to do) flourished in Alencon, and doubtless the South possesses others. The number of the Valesian tribe is, however, of no consequence to the present tale. All these chevaliers, among whom were doubtless some who were Valois as Louis XIV. was Bourbon, knew so little of one another that it was not advisable to speak to one about the others. They were all willing to leave the Bourbons in tranquil possession of the throne of France; for it was too plainly established that Henri IV....

Step into the world of 19th century France with Honoré de Balzac's 'The Jealousies of a Country Town'. This compelling novel is actually two novellas, 'An Old Maid' and 'The Collection of Antiquities', which explore the rivalries between the two dominant salons of the French town of Alencon. In 'An Old Maid', readers witness the struggle to win the heart of the head of the bourgeois salon, Mademoiselle Cormon, while in 'The Collection of Antiquities', they follow the highs and lows of the Comte d'Esgrignon, the son of the aristocratic salon. Balzac's writing is lively and incisive, with well-developed characters and dynamic pacing that will keep readers turning the pages until the very end.
