Published to accompany the first exhibition in Paris of highlights from The Museum of Modern Art, New York, Being Modern tells the stories behind 120 select artworks and design objects acquired by MoMA between the late 19th century and the present, providing a unique insight into the making of one of the greatest collections of modern and contemporary art in the world. Featuring work from all six of the Museum's departments, from Edward Hopper's House by the Railroad (1925) to the recently acquired original set of 176 digital emoji, the catalogue highlights the diversity and topicality of MoMA's collection, and provides a fresh perspective on the modernist canon. The book is organized chronologically according to the year each artwork entered MoMA's collection. Short texts by museum curators accompany each work, providing an overview of its significance as well as a behind-the-scenes look at the acquisitions process, often an untold aspect of a museum's history. Rather than presenting the collection as a flawlessly structured, stable entity, the book reveals its complex evolution and wide-ranging scope, demonstrating multiple ways of looking at MoMA's multidisciplinary collection.

Only a few are brave enough to fall . . . When Raini desperately needed help, she went to the one person who she knew could save her dying friend . . . her secretive and ruthlessly powerful anchor, Maddox. His price was that she grant him access to her life, yet he's still determined not to form the anchor bond with Raini. That rejection stings, even while she can't stop her body - or her demon - reacting to his presence. Maddox is a descendent, a rare breed of demon possessing angelic blood - and Raini knows he'll let someone close when hell freezes over. As a succubus, she's used to men wanting her uncontrollably - and used to having all the power. But while Maddox wants her strictly on hi...

Animal Cognition

Prepared as a tribute to Donald A. Riley, the essays that appear here are representative of a research area that has loosely been classified as animal cognition -- a categorization that reflects a functionalist philosophy that was prevalent in Riley's laboratory and that many of his students absorbed. According to this philosophy, it is acceptable to hypothesize that an animal might engage in complex processing of information, as long as one can operationalize evidence for such a process and the hypothesis can be presented in the context of testable predictions that can differentiate it from other mechanisms. The contributions to this volume represent the three most important areas of research in animal cognition -- stimulus representation, memory processes, and perceptual processes -- although current research has considerably blurred these distinctions.
