In her new multi-channel video installation 'The Demon's Brain', Agnieszka Polska combines real film material with animated sequences. The starting point of the work are letters from the 15th century written by Polish salt mines manager Mikolaj Serafin, who ran the pit like an autonomous, early capitalist company within the feudal social system. In her installation, Polska tells the fictional story of the postman who delivers Serafin's letters. One day he experiences a revelation in the woods while on his rounds, which offers an apocalyptic vision of the future.Published alongside the exhibition at Nationalgalerie im Hamburger Bahnhof - Museum für Gegenwart, Berlin in 2018/19.English and German text.

Using materials from the modern built environment--plaster, timber, plywood, wallpaper, chipboard, aluminum--Andrea Pichl creates impressive installations and constructions that bring to the fore architectural details and peculiarities that are often overlooked. Her work engages with and questions utopian ideals associated with Brutalist architecture or prefab housing developments in places such as Berlin, Taskent, Paris, Dublin, and London. Using photographs as a starting point, Pichl analyzes spaces, abstract forms, or banal objects--a chair, a corner, a flowerbox, a balcony--traces left behind or embedded into the layers of concrete and timber found in public plazas, GDR Plattenbau housin...

andererseits - Yearbook of Transatlantic German Studies

andererseits provides a forum for research, commentary, and creative work on topics related to the German-speaking world and the field of German Studies. Works presented in the publication come from a wide variety of genres including book reviews, poetry, essays, editorials, forum discussions, academic notes, lectures, and traditional peer-reviewed academic articles. In addition, we welcome contributions by journalists, librarians, archivists, and other commentators interested in German Studies broadly conceived. As a specifically transatlantic endeavor, we also highlight select topics in American Studies that impact German Studies. By publishing such a diverse array of material, we hope to demonstrate the extraordinary value of the humanities in general, and German Studies in particular, on a variety of intellectual and cultural levels. This issue features sections about German Studies approaches to media literacy, Stephen Dowden's book »Modernism and Mimesis« and the poetics of ambiguous memory.

JAK - Soul Blindness - Fall Into Indescribable Scenes

A film project with no planned ending and an artist that is unknown is the story behind JAK Soul Blindness. JAK, the nonexistent artist, has been working on the film Soul Blindness since 2013, yet the development process is unlike that of a normal film project. from one exhibition to the next, JAK continues to write the screenplay, using various media such as drawing, text, video, sound, sculpture, painting, photo, and installation. Continually shot, this film describes how the main character is dealing with agnosia, which is a loss or diminution of the ability to recognize familiar objects or stimuli, also referred to as soul blindness. This expansive project, which continues to be in progress, was exhibited at villa Merkel (esslingen, 2017), and in Stuttgart, Taipei, and Leonberg. The book gives an amazingly coherent insight into JAKs work with extensive images and informative essays, but you will not find any information or clues regarding who JAK is!
