Surface crystallography is a discipline which has come of age. There exist in the literature several hundred complete determinations of atomic configurations at surfaces: yet the number is not so great that cataloguing these structures is too daunting a task. We felt that now was the right moment to begin a compilation that could be updated at frequent intervals to give a comprehensive picture of the known surface world. The main purpose of this book is to provide an overview of all phenomena which can be categorized under the general label of ?electron scattering?, and to give a comprehensive description of all spectroscopical techniques related to electron scattering phenomena. Various classes of events are examined (electron in-electron out, photon in-electron out, electron in-two electron out, electron diffraction), together with the corresponding experimental techniques. A description of the underlying physics of various electron scattering phenomena is provided. For each spectroscopy, the general principles, the main fields of application, and some selected representative cases are discussed. The use of relatively low-cost electron sources is emphasized with respect to photon sources. The book is directed to PhD students and researchers not necessarily yet expert in the field.

The lifetime of a positron inside a solid is normally less than a fraction of nanosecond. This is a very short time on a human scale, but is long enough to enable the positron to visit an extended region of the material, and to sense the atomic and electronic structure of the environment. Thus, we can inject a positron in a sample to draw from it some signal giving us information on the microscopic properties of the material. This idea has been successfully developed in a number of positron-based techniques of physical analysis, with resolution in energy, momentum, or position.
