Syd Barrett & Pink Floyd

Syd Barrett was an English composer and purveyor of some of the most intriguing music ever written. Famous before his twentieth birthday, Barrett led the charge of psychedelia onstage at London's famed UFO club. With a Fender Telecaster and a primitive Binson echo unit, Barrett liberated the guitar from being, in critic Simon Reynolds' words, 'a riff machine, and turned it into a texture and timbre generator.' His inspired celestial flights of improvisation, and his more structured and whimsical short songs indicated a mind of unusual inventiveness. Chief in Barrett's mind was a Zen-like insistence on spontaneity; each performance had to be unique, and Barrett strived to push his music farth...

In the female empowering world of Terrene, a world very much like our own, but where young girls can have real power, a new story has arisen. Set on the beautiful Queensland coast in northeast Australia, four thirteen-year-old girls - and a boy this time - are all riders of the waves: they each have the power to call up a seahorse drawn from the crystal blue waters of the Coral Sea. But a life on the ocean waves leaves them all at sea when Petra Kerr, the Oil Baroness, starts pumping illegal oil in the area, threatening the precious ecosystem. It’s up to twins Melbourne and Sydney Fisher, Indonesian cousin Memberi Bambang, and friends Adelaide Brewer and native Australian Darwin Tonkin, to find a way to stop her. Their safe plan seems to be working - until Petra Kerr learns who they are, and decides to stop them before they can stop her. Like its predecessor Cloud Fighters, this is a top-of-the-line story aimed at middle-graders and young teens.

David Douglas

One of the most celebrated scientists and explorers of his day, David Douglas devoted his extraordinary energies to the exploration of the wild, unknown Pacific Northwest. This was the heroic age of botany, when European collectors scoured the globe for new species, and scientists and gardeners alike had an insatiable appetite for the exotic trees and plants of Asia, North America and Australia. In 1824 David Douglas set out on a journey to the area that will be forever associated with his name -- western Canada and the Pacific Northwest, which had first been explored by Lewis and Clark only 20 years before. For the next ten years, Douglas devoted himself to the exploration of this vast and virtually unknown land, to the collecting and classification of its flora, and to recording the life of its Native American population. The tree which bears his name was only one of 200 species which he was the first to collect and describe, and far from the only one which was to become of economic or horticultural importance.

This is the first study of the life and art of Sydney Chaplin, Charlie Chaplin's brother, a person notable not only for his importance in establishing his brother's career, but in several other early Hollywood enterprises, including the founding of United Artists and the Syd Chaplin Aircraft Corporation, America's first domestic airline. Sydney also had a successful film career, beginning in 1914 with Keystone and culminating with a string of popular films for Warner Bros. in the 1920s. Sydney's film career ended in 1929 because of an assault charge by an actress. This incident proved to be only the last in a string of scandals, each causing him to move to another place, another studio, or another business venture.

The Architecture of East Australia

The story of Australian architecture might be said to parallel the endeavours of Australians to adapt & reconcile themselves with their home & neighbours. It is the story of 200 years of coming to terms with the land: of adaptation, insight & making do. Early settlers were poorly provisioned, profoundly ignorant of the land & richly prejudiced towards its peoples. They pursued many paths over many terrains. From the moist temperate region of Tasmania with heavy Palladian villas to the monsoonal north with open, lightweight stilt houses, the continent has induced most different regional building styles.

(New adult paranormal fantasy with witches, vampires, werewolves) Seeking Syd This was a bad idea. Syd’s not here. And I won’t put the rest of the family at risk without her around to protect them. The back door opens, the motion-sensitive light coming on. I duck quickly to the side, hiding in the shadows with Sage shaking beside me, while a dark figure steps out into the yard. She looks worried, one hand clutching the door, the other clenched at her side. Dark, straight hair shivers around her as she takes another half-step onto the patio stones, the light reflecting from her dusky skin. “Charlotte?” Sashenka Hensley’s whisper carries into the night, backed by a thread of power, s...
