This book is about Jorge Frias, a Mexican from the Yucatan Peninsula. For almost twenty years he lived and worked in the United States without proper papers and was, therefore, an illegal alien. After being caught, he was allowed to voluntarily depart our country a couple of years ago. This is a story of how he managed to gain entry to this country illegally on many occasions, why he did it and what he did while here. In writing the book my intention was, in large part, to shed some light on the immigration issue, since it is a topic being hotly debated in Congress and across the country at the present time. In doing so, I also address U.S.-Mexican relations over the years and Jorges heritage. He is a Mestizo, which means he has the blood of the Spanish, the Mayans and other indigenous peoples of Mexico in him. He now lives in Playa del Carmen and takes tourists on guided tours of Mayan temples, among other things. He is also a poet.

Matisse and Picasso

"As Joachim Pissarro points out in the foreword of this volume, Matisse and Picasso's dense plot and rich narrative make this work read more like a suspense novel than a traditional art history treatise. Bois' thoroughly researched historical demonstration is supported by striking visual juxtapositions of works by the two artists brought together here for the first time, making this long-awaited study a major contribution to the history of twentieth-century art."--Jacket.

A fascinating history of the Maya - drawing on a wealth of recent archaeological discoveries - whose civilisation in the jungles of Central America was for almost a thousand years hidden from the world. Over the last two centuries explorers have made the most remarkable discoveries in the tropical forests of Central America. Across much of present-day Mexico, Guatemala, Belize and Honduras dozens of cities - some with populations of well over 100,000 - have been unveiled, and every year fresh reports emerge of the findings of unknown Maya ruins - great temples, palaces, towering stone pyramids and the tombs of the Maya kings. What these spectacular discoveries indicate is the former presence...

Spiritual Bathing

For centuries, people have used a combination of water, prayer, meditation and herbs to rejuvenate the mind, body and soul. In Spiritual Bathing, Rosita Arvigo and Nadine Epstein explore traditions—many lost or forgotten—that have been intertwined with religion, spirituality and culture since ancient and medieval times. From baptism to mikvahs to charity baths, these traditions can serve as a way to reconnect with nature or God; rejuvenate the mind, body and soul; and help relieve anxiety, insomnia and depression. Encompassing knowledge from 15 world traditions, this beautifully illustrated guide features detailed instructions to create nurturing and restorative spiritual bathing rituals both at home and elsewhere.

Jungle of the Maya

The Selva Maya (Jungle of the Maya) is one of the world's most magical yet least appreciated places—an enormous tropical forest that encompasses much of Belize, Guatemala, and Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. At 9,000,000 acres, it is the largest contiguous tropical forest north of the Amazon in the Western Hemisphere. Within its borders, the Selva Maya provides habitat for an astonishing diversity of plants and animals—more than 500 species of birds alone. The forest also contains the fascinating ruins of ancient Maya cities, which attract visitors and researchers from all over the globe. Jungle of the Maya presents a stunning photographic portrait of this irreplaceable natural treasure. Nat...

The Friar and the Maya

The Friar and the Maya offers a full study and new translation of the Relación de las Cosas de Yucatán (Account of the Things of Yucatan) by a unique set of eminent scholars, created by them over more than a decade from the original manuscript held by the Real Academia de la Historia in Madrid. This critical and careful reading of the Account is long overdue in Maya studies and will forever change how this seminal text is understood and used. For generations, scholars used (and misused) the Account as the sole eyewitness insight into an ancient civilization. It is credited to the sixteenth-century Spanish Franciscan, monastic inquisitor, and bishop Diego de Landa, whose legacy is complex a...
