Źródeł nowoczesnej nauki daremnie szukać na uniwersytetach: XVII-wieczna rewolucja naukowa dokonała się poza ich murami, w obrębie domów eksperymentalnych organizowanych przez arystokratów. Nauka doświadczalna, którą projektowali, więcej miała wspólnego z ówczesną praktyką sądowniczą, przedstawieniem teatralnym czy rozrywkami dżentelmenów niż debatami myślicieli.
