Plays not only represent a potential performance in a stage, but they also address issues of identity, society, and history in a certain culture. This thesis is translations and critiques of Modern Korean plays that suggest those issues in Korean culture: Moonlight Play written by Tae-Woong Kim, Material Man by Ji-Woo Hwang, and Terrorists by Sang-Hyeon Park. They were written from 1999 to 2004, namely from the end of the 20th century to the early 21st century. This thesis will address each play in one of three different ways: theory will be used to address issues of identity in Moonlight Play; a structural dramaturgical approach will be used to address issues of society in Material Man; and historical issues relating to Terrorists will be addressed by means of essay.

This Special Issue is a platform to fill the gaps in drought risk analysis with field experience and expertise. It covers (1) robust index development for effective drought monitoring; (2) risk analysis framework development and early warning systems; (3) impact investigations on hydrological and agricultural sectors; (4) environmental change impact analyses. The articles in the Special Issue cover a wide geographic range, across China, Taiwan, Korea, and the Indo-China peninsula, which covers many contrasting climate conditions. Hence, the results have global implications: the data, analysis/modeling, methodologies, and conclusions lay a solid foundation for enhancing our scientific knowledge of drought mechanisms and relationships to various environmental conditions.

Korean Americans in Chicago

Koreans first began to immigrate to Chicago at the turn of the 20th century. Drawn to the Windy City in search of a better life for themselves and their families, Korean Americans quickly began to establish what has become a thriving community that remains active and distinct. For the past 100 years, the Korean American community has contributed greatly to the growth and development of the Chicago metropolitan area-politically, culturally, and socially. In this book Korean Americans in Chicago celebrate these contributions with over 200 photographs that detail the various aspects of life within the community.

Education in South Korea

This book, the result of a landmark colloquium held in Korea to reflect on the role of education in Korean society, provides fascinating insights into the interplay of political evolution and pedagogy. Korea has gone from one of the world's poorest societies after the Korean War to one of its richest, and is a home of technological innovation; many attribute this ‘Korean Miracle’ to the emphasis placed on education in this Confucian society. How did the Korean state form, and how were educational institutions created and given legitimacy? During the industrialization period- roughly, 1961-1994- how did education foster national development? Lastly, since 1995's May 31 Education Reform, how has the educational system responded to and created a new information age in a newly democratic Korea? This book will be of interest to East Asian scholars, scholars of education, human resources development, and IT, and historians looking for ways to achieve the ‘Korean Miracle’ in their own countries.
