New Directions in Urban History
This volume introduces, through a series of freshly researched studies, new perspectives on the history of European urban culture from the eighteenth to the twentieth century. The approach is an international one, with essays on Austria-Hungary, France, Germany, Great Britain and Italy, and the authors drawn not only from Europe, but also the USA and Japan. The essays examine a range of specialist aspects of culture, such as gardening, spa towns, painting, and music. At the same time the contributors also explore jointly several broader interconnected themes - health, nature, the arts and cultural institutions, leisure, and tourism - of central importance to the cultural identity and development of the modern European town.

This book is the first edited volume focusing on handwritten newspapers as an alternative medium from a wide interdisciplinary and international perspective. Our primary focus is on handwritten newspapers as a social practice. The case studies contextualize the source materials in relation to political, cultural, literary, and economic history. The Murder, Betrayal, and Slaughter of the Glorious Charles, Count of Flanders
In 1127 Charles the Good, count of Flanders, was surrounded by assassins while at prayer and killed by a sword blow to the forehead. His murder upset the fragile balance of power between England, France, and the Holy Roman Empire, giving rise to a bloody civil war while impacting the commercial life of medieval Europe. The eyewitness account by the Flemish cleric Galbert of Bruges of the assassination and the struggle for power that ensued is the only journal to have survived from twelfth century Europe. This issue of Transpositiones showcases a range of interdisciplinary and critical approaches to classic and alternative conceptions of cognition and sources of knowledge. The articles reflect on the many types of sensory and extrasensory knowledge available to non-human beings and wonder whether and in what ways can we, as humans, perceive, conceptualize, and respect these knowledges. The authors highlight how the existence of multiple knowledges questions species boundaries and onto- and epistemological perspectives, in the process of learning not only about other beings but also from and along with them. This selection of texts attempts to contribute to overcoming the anthropocentric perception of subjectivity and to the abandoning of an optics based on the dualisms of nature and culture, spirit and matter, subject and object, animate and inanimate nature, physis and techne, etc., which are so firmly entrenched in the Western intellectual tradition.
