Environmental Design

The construction industry, including the concrete industry, faces the transformation process from the traditional building process to the new approach, "sustainable construction". Environmental aspects represent a key role in this process. The principal importance of the environmental impact evaluation of concrete structures follows from the high amount of concrete structures built around the world every year. The specific amount of harmful impacts embodied in concrete unit is, in comparison with other building materials, relatively small. However, due to the high production of concrete, the final negative environmental impact of concrete structures is significant. Any improvement of concret...

Recycling of Building Materials

The need to establish material cycles in the building industry is undisputed. Knowledge on this topic is available in many places: In this book it is summarised and systematized. After a general overview of the quantities generated, recovery rates and areas of application of recycled building materials, the current processing steps on which recycling is based and the possibilities for influencing the product properties are discussed. Furthermore, recycling building materials are characterized and their fields of application are presented. The starting point is always the original building material, which is later found in the construction waste. The focus is on the structural properties. The environmental aspects, which have determined the discussion for years, are shown to the necessary extent. The book concludes with a chapter that presents new developments in processing technologies and analyses the potential of construction waste as a source of raw materials.

Environmental Design of Concrete Structures

Considering the current state of global environmental issues, the construction industry is expected to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society by establishing environmental design systems for concrete structures and by developing the necessary technologies. The goal of sustainable environmental design is to reduce impacts on nature, society and humans by evaluating and verifying the environmental performance of the design. Environmental performance can be evaluated using indices such as resources, waste, energy, emission, etc. The necessary performance requirements for the verification of environmental performance are determined based on legislative regulations or on the parti...

Megacities

For the first time in human history, more than half the world’s population is urban. A fundamental aspect of this transformation has been the emergence of giant cities, or megacities, that present major new challenges. This book examines how issues of megacity development, urban form, sustainability, and unsustainability are conceived, how governance processes are influenced by these ideas, and how these processes have in turn influenced outcomes on the ground, in some cases in transformative ways. Through 15 in-depth case studies by prominent researchers from around the world, this book examines the major challenges facing megacities today. The studies are organized around a shared set of...

Expanding Boundaries: Systems Thinking in the Built Environment

Consuming over 40% of total primary energy, the built environment is in the centre of worldwide strategies and measures towards a more sustainable future. To provide resilient solutions, a simple optimisation of individual technologies will not be sufficient. In contrast, whole system thinking reveals and exploits connections between parts. Each system interacts with others on different scales (materials, components, buildings, cities) and domains (ecology, economy and social). Whole-system designers optimize the performance of such systems by understanding interconnections and identifying synergies. The more complete the design integration, the better the result. In this book, the reader will find the proceedings of the 2016 Sustainable Built Environment (SBE) Regional Conference in Zurich. Papers have been written by academics and practitioners from all continents to bring forth the latest understanding on systems thinking in the built environment.

Building for the Future: Durable, Sustainable, Resilient

This book presents the proceedings of the fib Symposium “Building for the future: Durable, Sustainable, Resilient”, held in Istanbul, Turkey, on 5–7 June 2023. The book covers topics such as concrete and innovative materials, structural performance and design, construction methods and management, and outstanding structures. fib (The International Federation for Structural Concrete) is a not-for-profit association whose mission is to develop at an international level the study of scientific and practical matters capable of advancing the technical, economic, aesthetic, and environmental performance of concrete construction.
