The changes in post-socialist Central and Eastern European countries have been affected by external influences more than any preceding wave of democratization. The contributions in this volume reflect the wide variety of Europeanization processes taking place in Central and Eastern Europe. They not only serve to illustrate the significant differences among post-socialist transformations, but also highlight the variety of theoretical concepts and methodological approaches at our disposal to research different aspects of Europeanization in the broader context of globalization and identity changes. The first part of the book deals with Europeanization ‘from above’, i.e. with the European Co...
With her research, Svenja Post offers an in-depth analysis of the implementation of the Comprehensive Approach in international crisis management both on EU and on member state national level. The author demonstrates in detail which steps have been taken on conceptual and on structural level by the EU and its member states Great Britain, Germany and Sweden to organize and realize crisis management coherence. In addition to identifying challenges involved actors are confronted with, Svenja Post also points out a set of recommendations for future efforts to close the gap between aspiration and reality of comprehensive European crisis management.
Why should the earliest literary encounters between China and the United States—and their critical interpretation—matter now? How can they help us describe cultural exchanges in which nothing substantial is exchanged, at least not in ways that can easily be tracked? All sorts of literary meetings took place between China and the United States in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, involving an unlikely array of figures including canonical Americans such as Washington Irving, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow; Chinese writers Qiu Jin and Dong Xun; and Asian American writers like Yung Wing and Edith Eaton. Yet present-day interpretations of these interactions of...
This volume studies the relevance of European integration for conflict settlement and conflict resolution in divided states such as Cyprus or Serbia and Montenegro.
Attempting to pacify the emergent wars in the 1990s, the European Union mediation could not stop the vast destruction and prevent genocide from taking place right next door to the EU, the world’s biggest peace project. In the 21st century, the Western Balkans region has again become a subject of testing the EU’s “new” foreign policy instrument – mediation. This time, the EU assumed the role of a post-conflict mediator aiming to sustainably resolve the (intractable) conflicts in the post-war setting of the region. While its first mediations in the former Yugoslavia were unsuccessful, the EU's recent mediation attempts in the post-violent stage of the Balkans’ conflicts have resulted in varied outcomes. Introducing a new model, this book explains the varying effectiveness of EU mediation in post-conflict and analyses the determining conditions of the EU mediation efficiency in post-conflict settings. The book is among the few publications that shed light on EU mediation utilized as an instrument of conflict resolution that aims to solve protracted conflicts in post-conflict settings.

Nancy has joined Ned on campus for Emerson College’s homecoming weekend, and that means pep rallies, parades, and, of course, the annual gridiron clash with archrival Russell University. But when danger takes the field, the cheers turn to tears—because winning is crucial when a player’s life is on the line.
In this original and fascinating book, Peter S. Field argues that Ralph Waldo Emerson is America's first democratic intellectual. Field contends that Emerson was a democrat in two senses: his writings are imbued with an optimistic, confident ethos, and more importantly, he acted the part of the democrat by bringing culture to all Americans. In Ralph Waldo Emerson, Field connects Emerson and his remarkable creativity to the key political issue of the day: the nature of democracy and the role of intellectuals within a democratic society.
Nancy investigates the assault on a college campus sweetheart.
