Tamils have a long history starting from the pre-historic period. Retracing their history is facilitated by various sources. One-third of India's epigraphical sources pertain to Tamil Nadu and one of the dynasties of Tamil Nadu - the Pandyas - had the privilege of continuous rule from third century B.C. to sixteenth century A.D. It is a unique accomplishment in the annals of history, since very few dynasties in the world have reigned for such a long time. A remarkable feature of the Tamils is that they are the founders of Dravidian architecture. In this book, the author has updated the Tamil Nadu history with recent findings. As books dealing with Tamil Nadu history comprehensively, includin...

M.S.S. Pandian (1958 2014) was an eminent historian of South Indian politics, caste, culture, and cinema. His writings offer distinctively Tamil insights on these areas. In this book his chief focus is Tamil political culture for roughly thirty years since 1985. His success lies in bringing a historical understanding to bear on what he called the strangeness of Tamil Nadu . A key figure in Pandian s thinking was E.V. Ramasamy Periyar . Pandian argues that Periyar s ideals and strategies long remained popular among Tamil progressives, but that their survival became difficult because of radical changes in pan-Indian political culture. To show these changes, this book is organised chronologically as well as along thematic sections that reflect the themes of Periyar s Dravidian ideology: linguistic identity, state politics, religion, and caste. Periyar s ideas, Pandian argues, can still provide productive standards for critical analysis of politics in India. But because they are not widely known or appreciated outside Tamil Nadu, they represent the strangeness of Tamil politics instead of being adapted as progressive in the country as a whole.

This is the ninth volume in a major series which studies the status of land reforms throughout the country. Critically examining the implementation of land reforms legislations in Tamil Nadu, the contributors address all the major issues including land and caste, temple lands, common property resources and absentee landlordism. They show that, due to laxity in implementing legislation, resourceful landowners successfully hold on to their surplus lands using various devious methods. By presenting detailed case studies, various essays explain the reasons why the provisions have not been efficacious and also suggest ways to overcome the problems.

An Untouchable Community in South India

While many studies suggest that Indian Untouchables do not entirely share the hierarchical values characteristic of the caste system, Michael Moffatt argues that the most striking feature of the lowest castes is their pervasive cultural consensus with those higher in the system. Though rural Untouchables question their particular position in the system, they seldom question the system as a whole, and they maintain among themselves a set of hierarchical conceptions and institutions virtually identical to those of the dominant social order. Based on fourteen months of fieldwork with Untouchable castes in two villages in Tamil Nadu, south India, Professor Moffatt's analysis specifies ways in wh...

Dynamics of Tamil Nadu Politics in Sri Lankan Ethnicity

Tamil Nadu has been playing its legitimate role in the inter-government relationship on the Tamil issues. The magnitude of the state politics in the problems of Sri Lankan Tamils has reached its Zenith during the past one decade as a result of the eruption of ethnic violence in Sri Lanka. Since Tamil Polity has been fully dominated by ethnic political parts, each one has been trying its level best to project itself as the Vanguard of Tamil Nationalism. This book traces the approaches of the political parties and especially ethnic political parties towards the Sri Lankan Tamil issues. It also analyses to what extent the pressure extended by the ethnic political parties has been taken into acc...

The material presented in this study deals with a rarely explored area of Indian national history. It provides fresh perspectives and lays to rest the unfounded belief that benighted Tamil Nadu played no significant role in the early stirrings of the national movement.

'Saare Jhan Se Achchha Hindostan Hamara' (Our India is the best among all lands in the world) said Dr Iqbal, the poet of East. Now this poetic line has evolved into a symbolic expression for the greatness of our country. This is sung frequently and used widely for an easy, prompt and soft pronouncement of the greatness and novelty of our country. No doubt, India is great and illustrious. Its on top as far as its heritage, history, philosophy and culture is concerned. Our team of authors and editors has made their best efforts to depict the same greatness of our country and nation in this series. Here is a treasure, bound into books. This is the best example of 'knowledge in a nutshell'. Need...
