Synergetics
This book is an often-requested reprint of two classic texts by H. Haken: "Synergetics. An Introduction" and "Advanced Synergetics". Synergetics, an interdisciplinary research program initiated by H. Haken in 1969, deals with the systematic and methodological approach to the rapidly growing field of complexity. Going well beyond qualitative analogies between complex systems in fields as diverse as physics, chemistry, biology, sociology and economics, Synergetics uses tools from theoretical physics and mathematics to construct an unifying framework within which quantitative descriptions of complex, self-organizing systems can be made. This may well explain the timelessness of H. Haken's original texts on this topic, which are now recognized as landmarks in the field of complex systems. They provide both the beginning graduate student and the seasoned researcher with solid knowledge of the basic concepts and mathematical tools. Moreover, they admirably convey the spirit of the pioneering work by the founder of Synergetics through the essential applications contained herein that have lost nothing of their paradigmatic character since they were conceived.
Advances in Natural Language Processing
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 4th International Conference, EsTAL 2004, held in Alicante, Spain in October 2004. The 42 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 72 submissions. Temporal Networks
The concept of temporal networks is an extension of complex networks as a modeling framework to include information on when interactions between nodes happen. Many studies of the last decade examine how the static network structure affect dynamic systems on the network. In this traditional approach the temporal aspects are pre-encoded in the dynamic system model. Temporal-network methods, on the other hand, lift the temporal information from the level of system dynamics to the mathematical representation of the contact network itself. This framework becomes particularly useful for cases where there is a lot of structure and heterogeneity both in the timings of interaction events and the network topology. The advantage compared to common static network approaches is the ability to design more accurate models in order to explain and predict large-scale dynamic phenomena (such as, e.g., epidemic outbreaks and other spreading phenomena). On the other hand, temporal network methods are mathematically and conceptually more challenging. This book is intended as a first introduction and state-of-the art overview of this rapidly emerging field.
Advanced Data Mining and Applications
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Advanced Data Mining and Applications, ADMA 2012, held in Nanjing, China, in December 2012. The 32 regular papers and 32 short papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 168 submissions. Formal Models of Agents
This volume provides a selection of strictly refereed papers first presented during a workshop held within the context of the ESPRIT ModelAge Project in Certosa di Pertignano, Italy, in 1997. The 15 revised full papers presented together with an introductory survey by the volume editors were carefully reviewed for inclusion in the book. The book is devoted to the interdisciplinary study of formal models of agency and intelligent agents from the points of view of artificial intelligence, software engineering, applied logic, databases, and organization theory. This volume presents the proceedings of the International COST 237 Workshop, held in Vienna in November 1994 in the framework of the CEC COST 237 Multimedia Telecommunications Services Projects. The 24 papers presented in revised version were selected from 46 submissions; they are organized in sections on teleservices, multimedia mail, archiving and retrieving; teleservice support; quality of service and synchronization; multipeer communication; broadband network transport issues; and variable bit rate video coding transport.
