The peoples of Sri Lanka have participated in far-flung trading networks, religious formations, and Asian and European empires for millennia. This interdisciplinary volume sets out to draw Sri Lanka into the field of Asian and Global History by showing how the latest wave of scholarship has explored the island as a ‘crossroads’, a place defined by its openness to movement across the Indian Ocean.Experts in the history, archaeology, literature and art of the island from c.500 BCE to c.1850 CE use Lankan material to explore a number of pressing scholarly debates. They address these matters from their varied disciplinary perspectives and diverse array of sources, critically assessing concepts such as ethnicity, cosmopolitanism and localisation, and elucidating the subtle ways in which the foreign may be resisted and embraced at the same time. The individual chapters, and the volume as a whole, are a welcome addition to the history and historiography of Sri Lanka, as well as studies of the Indian Ocean region, kingship, colonialism, imperialism, and early modernity.

Print Culture at the Crossroads investigates how the spread of printing shaped a distinctive literary culture in Central Europe during the early modern period. Moving beyond the boundaries of the nation state, twenty-five scholars from over a dozen countries examine the role of the press in a region characterised by its many cultures, languages, religions, and alphabets. Antitrinitarians, Roman and Greek Catholics, Calvinists, Jews, Lutherans, and Orthodox Christians used the press to preserve and support their communities. By examining printing and patronage networks, catalogues, inventories, woodblocks, bindings, and ownership marks, this volume reveals a complicated web of connections linking printers and scholars, Jews and Christians, across Central Europe and beyond.

Offering both intellectual refreshment and spiritual encouragement, Where is This God of Yours? explores the potential of evolutionary theory to transform how we see ourselves, our relationships, our belief systems, and our purpose for being here. Gathered from years of research and reading, Jean Denomme has woven her interests in history, science, and theology into this thorough discussion of evolutionary theory, the nature of human consciousness, and the nature of God. Where is This God of Yours? raises questions of God and presents basic evolutionary theory in regard to the development of the universe, earth, and humans. It examines Catholic teachings, human behavior, and human purpose within an evolutionary context, while providing insights into the sources of human suffering and consequent personal and social responsibility. This exploration of science and faith is geared for Catholics and other Christians who are looking for a way to believe without turning off their minds and for those who want to find a more engaging purpose for living on earth than the hope of some mythical life in another world.

Healing The Wounds of Change

At one time or another, each of us must deal with the inner wounds left in the wake of life’s changes, transitions, and losses. These challenging experiences affect every part of who we are: body, mind, and spirit. In Healing the Wounds of Change, Dr. Brady Reinsmith provides a practical guide to helping us understand and heal our wounds of change. She shares meaningful insights and suggestions that can help us move confidently forward, toward personal and spiritual renewal, and toward a more satisfying life. She suggests that we begin with a deeper understanding of the significance of change, of its many "faces.” She then focuses on dealing with the stress of change, on the relational nature of change, the fears and anxieties it generates, and its opportunities for holistic renewal. Healing the Wounds of Change presents an inclusive approach to personal and spiritual renewal. It includes relevant information from the disciplines of psychology, philosophy, neuroscience, theology, and spirituality, and suggests ways that we can generate inner peace and joy – for ourselves and for others.

In 1969, the year following the death of Thomas Merton, Henri Nouwen published his first book. Who, reading Intimacy: Essays in Pastoral Psychology, at the time could have guessed that its 37 year old Dutch priest-author would become one of the most popular spiritual writers of the 20th-century?Unlike Merton, whose strictly spiritual writings appealed almost exclusively to Roman Catholics, Nouwen had an enormous following among Protestants as well as Catholics. What was it about this man and his work that so resonated with the American psyche over the past thirty years? In The Spiritual Legacy of Henri Nouwen, Deidre LaNoue analyzes Nouwen's voluminous writings in the context of his life and times, providing a key to his more than forty individual books as well as a cogent summary of his contribution to the spiritual lives of millions of people. The book includes a complete bibliography of Nouwen's writings as well as a Scripture index of his books.
