William Sims Bainbridge Virtual worlds are persistent online computer-generated environments where people can interact, whether for work or play, in a manner comparable to the real world. The most prominent current example is World of Warcraft (Corneliussen and Rettberg 2008), a massively multiplayer online game with 11 million s- scribers. Some other virtual worlds, notably Second Life (Rymaszewski et al. 2007), are not games at all, but Internet-based collaboration contexts in which people can create virtual objects, simulated architecture, and working groups. Although interest in virtual worlds has been growing for at least a dozen years, only today it is possible to bring together an international team of highly acc- plished authors to examine them with both care and excitement, employing a range of theories and methodologies to discover the principles that are making virtual worlds increasingly popular and may in future establish them as a major sector of human-centered computing.

In this autobiographical account of life in Seoul just before the March First uprising in 1919 and exile in Shanghai afterwards, Peter Hyun vividly describes what it was like to grow up in an occupied Korea subjected to Japanese colonial rule. The son of a member of the Korean Provisional Government in Exile, Hyun presents an intimate portrait of that small band of Korean revolutionaries who kept alive the hope of Korean independence. They have been all but forgotten or ignored, and their story, told by an eyewitness, represents a valubale historical record. At the heart of the story are the author's father, the patriot Reverend Soon Hyun, and his mother, Maria Hyun, an extraordinary woman of courage and integrity.
SAY CHIC...C'est magnifique! Ever wonder why some French words have become so common in English as to be clichés? Or why your witty repartee wouldn't be quite so witty without them? In Say Chic, Françoise Blanchard and Jeremy Leven collect more than seventy familiar French words and phrases that have become a permanent part of the American vocabulary. In their clever, often amusing style, the authors explain the origin of each word, its meaning, and how it came to be adopted into English. Uniting the sensibilities of an American author and a French author, these surprisingly entertaining stories combine world history, pop culture, etymology, and pithy observations about Americans and the French, with no small amount of panache. Featuring delightful illustrations, Say Chic will find its raison d'être on the bookshelf of anyone who has ever longed to be an American in Paris and hankers for a bit more of that irresistible je ne sais quoi in America.
In the early grades, talking and drawing can provide children with a natural pathway to writing, yet these components are often overlooked. In Talking, Drawing, Writing: Lessons for Our Youngest Writers , authors Martha Horn and Mary Ellen Giacobbe invite readers to join them in classrooms where they listen, watch, and talk with children, then use what they learn to create lessons designed to meet children where they are and lead them into the world of writing. The authors make a case for a broader definition of writing, advocating for formal storytelling sessions, in which children tell about what they know, and for focused sketching sessions so that budding writers learn how to observe mor...

This is my testimony of being married to a man, who was a wolf in sheep's clothing. A depiction of a narcissistic man who's only goal was to deceive, for his own entertainment. He destroyed everything and everyone in his wake. This is a true story of how being desperate to be loved caused my life to be destroyed. I hope that my struggle within my relationship and within myself is helpful to someone that may be having the same experiences. Love starts from within and far too many people have not learned to love themselves before trying to love someone else. It's easier than you realize to fall into this trap. Blind love is dangerous; blindly loving the wrong man is a death sentence.

Very common optical coatings are those that give the faint, reflected color to the lenses in cameras, binoculars, and spectacles. The thin metal layer that makes the difference between a mirror and a simple sheet of glass is an optical coating. But, optical coatings are used in many more applications-a particularly important current one being the s
